Um yeah, I go to click the log off icon or shut down icon, etc and all that happens is that my icons flash on my desktop once then nothing happens.  The option box that comes up stating whether you want to restart, shut down, or turn on stand by wont even come up.  Xfire also wont start up, same thing happens, the icons just flash once.  Fuck off if you tell me to search, I dont give a damn.  Any help....

Have you brought up task manager to see it?  (Xfire) Close the process down and restart it.

A hard reset(holding the powerbutton, etc.) should do the trick. ALways works for me. If not then, start up in safe mode or something and recover.

sorry but the search button wont shut your computer off..  is it a laptop or desktop.  if desktop, nothing like a good hard tug on the power cord.  if laptop, good luck!

Better it doesn't shut off than won't turn on.

If it's a laptop

1) Unplug from the wall

2) remove the battery

maybe you should do a thorough spyware/virus scan. if nothing come up i would suggest to reinstall everything. way easier than spending hours to look for a problem
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I seem to remember having this once and the culprit was windows update. For some reason it was overriding the shutdown command until it finished and it was downloading a stupidly large update. Everytime I forced it to shutdown it would turn off but when I restarted the computer it would start the download again and of course it wouldn't shutdown again. In the end I just had to let it complete the download and everything was okay after that.

I think this was with service pack 1 before it had the sensible update tool.
