If I just want to put another hard drive in my computer, to add extra storage, to I have to cnfigure RAID, ie. buy a RAID card and install the software?
Also, can I put an IDE HDD in the same system as a SATA HDD?

you dont have to use raid if you dont want to. as long as you have connections for ide and sata drives you can put both types in at the same time

just as an example:

in my pc i have
1 x SATA 74 GB raptor for win and games
2 x SATA 400GB in Raid 1 for mass storage
1 x IDE 160 GB movies
1 x IDE 120 GB music, images, and ISOs
2 x IDE DVD-RAM burners

EDIT: All except the 2x 400GBs are non-raided

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

If you just want to add a HDD, you dont have to get into RAID stuff. Just buy the disk, ( SATA or PATA ) and install it, just make sure you have space in your motherboard for it.

RAID is an arrangement of HDD's that will either give you more performace ( RAID 0 ), disk mirroring ( RAID 1 ) and other feautures that I dont really think that a home pc needs ,( RAID 2 til whatever )

Depend what you want it for.

Large scale sever use, where throughput and secuirty is vital = get RAID card.
Adding more storage = just plug and play (remeber master / slave)
"RAID" (ie softRaid / fakeRaid), put in drive set up in BIOS (RAID 1 for Mirror, RAID 0 Stripping etc) = desktop RAID

raid 0 is nice for increasing performance. you just about half load times.
