I love it when people are tricked. So please post your own favorite. Qualifications - has to be confirmed as absolutely false, and has to have a large price tag associated with it.
Mine:
Loch Ness Monster
-A photo of the monster was circulated in 1934. The photographer later admitted on his death bed it was a toy submarine with a dinosaur head attached.
Actual costs:
-Countless sonar sweeps with false "hits" which resulted in more sonar sweeps
-A few hundred hydrophones deployed and monitor for months
-Countless cameras & photos to shift thru
