I love it when people are tricked. So please post your own favorite. Qualifications - has to be confirmed as absolutely false, and has to have a large price tag associated with it.

Mine:
Loch Ness Monster
-A photo of the monster was circulated in 1934. The photographer later admitted on his death bed it was a toy submarine with a dinosaur head attached.

Actual costs:
-Countless sonar sweeps with false "hits" which resulted in more sonar sweeps
-A few hundred hydrophones deployed and monitor for months
-Countless cameras & photos to shift thru

I also saw one where he had 100 people around a jet plane, put a sheet up around all of them with the plane in the middle, and had bright lights pointed at the people...so you can see their silhouettes. Then the sheet dropped, and no plane. Someone said that the plane was made of chocolate and the people ate it when the sheet was up...lol.

Can anyone remind me of who this is about?
A queen is killed when having sexual relations with a horse. Apparently the horse was lowered on top of the queen and the pulleys failed.

I can't remember - I think it was a Russian queen...

Anyone who likes conspiracy theories should read "The Rough Guide to Conspiracy Theories", by James McConnachie and Robin Tudge. Over 400 pages of conspiracy stories and arguments from both pro and con viewpoints. A little drily written (it was originally published in the UK) but with enough pictures to make the 8-point font palatable. Plus you get more bang for your buck!

Anyway no, I haven't been paid off by the authors, but it is a nice little book for budding conspiracy theorists.

Yes, he really did.
It was authenticated by the VERY eminent historian Hugh Trevor-Roper. He was an expert on British history, as well as Nazi history. Trevor-Roper had an impeccable pedigree, and virtually came of age in the 1940s. He started publishing during the war, and his 1947 "The Last Days of Hitler" detailed the last week of "the Fuehrer's" life (thus putting to rest the rumours he was still alive) and was virtually commissioned by the British government. He was a history professor at Oxford, and there is hardly a higher place to rise (in the english-speaking world), and he published dozens of works from that chair over the following decades.
He had a long and distinguished career, topped off in 1983 when he authenticated a collection of papers discovered in a Berlin bunker to be the actual diary of Hitler. An absolutely stunning discovery, hidden all these many years!

EDIT: Oh yes, except that the "discovery" was a cheap forgery, concocted by a couple of two-bit, semi-smart hoods, who sucked in many. Most of them had no brain, but a few, like Trevor-Roper (by this time, his preminence had landed him a lordship!), should have know ficking better. Hitler never kept a diary, and as far as many were concerned a lifetime of mentoring and scholarship was erased, and Hugh Trevor-Roper ended his career as a laughing-stock.

I tend to think that to. I don't hold any belief that aliens have the ability to come to the earth, yet, if they exist, I've always thought they would differ very little from the human anatomy. I also think we are the most technoligically advanced and, if they exist, aliens are the primitive ones.
