It certainly didn't help H.R. Trevor-Roper's reputation that he pursued the matter of Hitler's allegedly undescended testicle so doggedly, either. (For the record, no credible evidence has surfaced that, as per the WWII-era ditty, "Hitler has only got one ball." It was authenticated by the VERY eminent historian Hugh Trevor-Roper. He was an expert on British history, as well as Nazi history. Trevor-Roper had an impeccable pedigree, and virtually came of age in the 1940s. He started publishing during the war, and his 1947 "The Last Days of Hitler" detailed the last week of "the Fuehrer's" life (thus putting to rest the rumours he was still alive) and was virtually commissioned by the British government. He was a history professor at Oxford, and there is hardly a higher place to rise (in the english-speaking world), and he published dozens of works from that chair over the following decades.
He had a long and distinguished career, topped off in 1983 when he authenticated a collection of papers discovered in a Berlin bunker to be the actual diary of Hitler. An absolutely stunning discovery, hidden all these many years!
EDIT: Oh yes, except that the "discovery" was a cheap forgery, concocted by a couple of two-bit, semi-smart hoods, who sucked in many. Most of them had no brain, but a few, like Trevor-Roper (by this time, his preminence had landed him a lordship!), should have know ficking better. Hitler never kept a diary, and as far as many were concerned a lifetime of mentoring and scholarship was erased, and Hugh Trevor-Roper ended his career as a laughing-stock.
