Planning on upgrading one last thing on my rig before moving on to a new one, the video card. Gonna possibly be replacing my old ati 9550 256mb with a nvidia 7600GS, haven't decided whether i'm gonna go with leadtek, evga, or msi, but that's besides the point.

My current setup:

CPU - Amd Athlon xp 2600+ at 1.94ghz (mobo won't let me lock agp/pci frequency so oc does next to nothing)
Mobo - Gigabyte 7vt600-p-rz
Ram - 2gb of pc3200 ddr400

As it's on it's last leg, i'm starting to think the cpu might just end up bottlenecking with a 7600, but I've only gotten into computers in the last 10 months or so, not yet completly sure.

What are u thoughts?

Not that I'm a computer expert, but I'd say that from my limited knowledge and your provided information about the components, it would appear to me that the only component to slow you down would be your processor. Again, don't take this as fact, but I think that'll be bottleneck.

Hope this is somewhat helpful for you.

k, my dad wants me to just swap the card, but he's forgetting how long i've had this rig. I'd like to build a new one, but money is tight, and the best i'd be able to do would be to get an E6600, a mobo for it, and a new case. That would probably cost me about 500 right there, and i'd have 200 left over.

E6600 $377.95
(P5B-E) INTEL P965  $209.95
or
ASUS (P5B-VM)(INTEL G965)  $179.95

any video card suggestions?

Don't forget, you'll need to buy new memory too.

If you can afford to upgrade to C2D then do it. The performance increase from a 2600 xp will be very noticeable.
Not sure whether that first mobo you linked to is compatible with C2D but the second one is.

I'm still looking at what memory can fit my budget. I'll most likely start out with 1gb and buy the second later, unless my parents wanna lend me some.

naw that should be fine, try to overclock it to 2.2ghz at least

my roomie is running a barton 2500+ @3200 speeds, a small overclock because his case sucks and has no airflow at all but it runs fine wit a 7800GS agp card

its not a bottlneck

you should be ok

those cards have less pixelpipelines and are AGP, your cpu was around when AGP was king so it should be fine

My mobo won't let me overclock anymore. I was only able to go from 1.92 to 1.94 before I'd get a random crash after a full day.

if this is your board then no it wont "bottleneck" things. http://www.pcclub.com/clearance_details … o=A4830955  . if i were you id get this 7600gt http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814150190 . i think its one of the best agp 7600 cards out there. plus xfx give a double lifetime warranty. you have a good amount of memory. your motherboard isn't bad. but its still only a socket a board...specs... http://www.pcclub.com/clearance_details … =A4830955. your processor is really the weak link . you could upgrade a socket a chip very cheap if you can find a faster one. i know newegg is out. but there are others out there. game performance in my opinion is going to be limited to the next 5-6 months before you need a complete rebuild. if it were me id save my cash. you can play bf2 right? then id just hold out for as long as i could and let some of the prices come down on the new stuff. then build a mid to top end machine. lots of info sources are saying that once vista comes out more product will hit the market lowering prices of the stuff we can get now. save you money and use it toward a direct x 10 machine. nvidia's 8800 is expensive now but you know that another card is in the works. when it comes out the 8800 wont be so expensive.  i have put lots of money into machines that should have been retired just to build a new one in a few months after i realize I'm beating a dead horse so to speak

I went from this

XP2800+ Barton
2 Gigs RAM
6800GS AGP

Straight mediums on 1024x768 with no dynamics and no AA/AF

to a 7800GS AGP

Straight mediums on 1280x1024 with no dynamics and no AA/AF

Basically it allowed a resolution upgrade, which overall improved things, but I mean.. looking back.. wasn't worth the effort. Good thing I got the 7800GS for super cheap from someone upgrading to a Conroe/PCI-E setup.
