(Not defending Alienware) ... but, does the Alienware computer come to your home as a bunch of parts, or as a complete unit?  What about an operating system?  That's $200 you forgot ...

That extra $400 or so pays for assembly, OS installation, testing, etc.    You may want to do this yourself, or you may want to pay someone to do it.
tis true, but 400? how about 200, or 150. 100 for the OS and 50% for installation.

i built my comp at home in 30 mins. that wagers maybe 20, 50 for the outlandish.
I did an edit ... after the OS it is $257 ... it may take you 30 mins to plug everything together, but the OS installation takes another hour.
Sorry orange, your wrong, it doesnt take an hour. If you truely have a ballsy computer the windows install could go as fast as 20 mins (if you know what your doing). I would much rather install windows myself and wait the half hour then have them install it and wait a half hour lol. And honestly WHO really buys there OS anymore... jeez.

just ordered components from newegg a few hours ago totalling around $1300.  But I'm getting a hell of a lot more for my money.

-E6600 2.4ghz
-1gb(2x512) corsair DDR2 800 (will be the weak spot, anticipating upgrade)
-Thermaltake 700w modular cable PSU
-Lian Li Aluminum mid tower
-Asus Mobo
-250gb WD caviar SATA 3.0gb/s 7200rpm 16mb cache

And the BEST part:

-eVGA 8800gts 640mb GDDR3 (obscenely powerful, first gen of DX10 cards)

Already have a Dell 19" monitor that will suffice for now.  Already have an X-Fi card and disc drives.  Another gig of ram will be first ungrade.  Future may bring moderate water cooling, 150gb raptor, or two.  I'm figuring this system should hold me over for at least a year or two.  This is my big PCI-e jump(yes, laugh it up) so I don't wanna completely slouch

Dellienware has a good performance reputation but $1400 and a little motivation can get you a lot more.

I don't care how good your computer is. Unless you have a copy of Windows with SP2 slipstreamed, there's NO WAY IN HELL you can load Windows in 20 minutes. Hell, even with it slipstreamed it still takes at least half an hour.

P5B.  single PCIeX16 slot is all I'll need for now.  It's only $130, so if I decide to upgrade, it won't hurt too much.

Might be overpriced, but I didn't have to search the net for everything I needed, I didn't have to put it together, and when I got it, I plugged it in and played.

A person might be able to put a better machine together for the same amount of money, but not me.  Knowing my luck, I'd put it all together and fry everything in the case (probably not, but you catch my drift).  If you can do it, more power to ya.  In my case, I'll take it and run.  Some of you can say what you want about being over priced or whatever, but I love my AW.
