Considering the media manipulates society, I'd really ultimately argue the "media" has changed.

Death is a headline to them. 2900 deaths are 2900 headlines. Headlines sell.

Personally I think we should institute a draft. Draft everyone of those "headline hunter" media vulchers and drop their ass in the sand box.
Very true, indeed. I dont think a draft is a good idea because I know when I am getting shot at i dont want one of those draftees that didnt wanna join up voluntarily by my side covering my ass. However I think we do need some sorta mandatory service for high school grads. Europe does it and it seems to work rather well. Anyways the media does tend to make things rather hard.
Was being a bit facetious with the draft idea, moreso for a bit of irony.

I don't think I'd want a media vulcher covering my 6 either.

I do agree with mandatory service though. I, myself, wasn't able to sign in due to medical conditions & flat feet . But that's another story alltogether
Oh I see your point though man. Make those reporters and media corp. head honchos see what its like to be in a combat situation and maybe they'll gain some respect for those "headlines" they oh so love to report about.

I've served with some guys that didnt wanna be in combat but they knew that didnt have much choice in the matter and did their job but I highly doubt most Americans would be able to handle being thrown into a combat situation against their will and I dont want Private Dumbass to be my last line of backup.

2,900 US Troops have died in Iraq? Thats over three years.
Do you realize we lost 80,000 men in 30 days during the battle of the bulge? There were just no camera's there to document each one.
Yea from a military standpoint 2,900 troops lost in 3 years isnt very bad at all.
we lose almost that many in training accidents lol.

it sucks that every single death is filmed in great detail and made out to be such a huge deal.  but the truth is that if we werent there rightnow, it would be way worse than it is now.  anyways, we need to support our troops, even if bush is an idiot(and i am a republican, that guys just stupid though)  we need to finish this up as fast as we can, because next election, hillary clinton is most likely gonna win, and the damn democrats are gonna pull troops out so fast that iraq WILL fall apart and be like it was before we removed sadaam. (which is NOT a good thing)

^^ It's not up to us to finish this up. The Iraqi government taking control is what will do this.

Turning point in US history? Definetly. US is on the way down again. Vietnam was the turning point, followed by the oil crisis and the big price hike.
If this war puts out long enough, who knows how many other countries maybe come involved, or become targets.

Ditto man. I'm not sure if I wanna stay in the military if she becomes president. 3,000 from training accidents? I've never heard of anybody dying in any training accidents but i'll take your word for it. Yea im not a very big Bush supporter myself but i'd rather have him in office anyday over Wacky Hillary.

There will be more terror attacks someday and not just on US soil, so it is inevitable other countries will be forced to get involved. This will become much larger than just a US conflict.

Well, there isn't much industry left over there, labour laws are getting in the way of sweatshops, and everything's been outsourced to China or India.

forget it mandatory army sucks. if the media thinks we lose many troops now then try and consider unexperienced soldiers dying without even doing it freely. they also have a less chance of survival because of the decrease in training they have had. we have mandatory army here in Denmark but we only have to serve 4 months (what a laugh) and our mandatory army is always territorial, so it can't do a lot.

point is, if the US begins a mandatory program and then send the mandatory soldiers to war then they will have way bigger casualities and more media coverage and outrage on them.

Slightly off topic here but isnt it funny how many of you jump up and down about "why is everyone posting US bashing threads" and the like but then you post something like this?

What I mean by that statement is that many (no not all) Americans fail to see what is outside of America, am I to take it that America and Canada are the only country to have troops in the 'box? or are they the only country who has troops over there that matter?

You guys wonder why we make silly statements like "Americans are arrogant" or "America doesnt see what else is going on" then you perpetuate it with posts like this.

Ryan_14 I agree almost completely with your original post. I truly beleive that lines are definately being drawn and sides are being taken but dont forget that you guys havent been and arent the only ones over, this would not be such a big deal normally but I have good mates that I went through training with over there still and  some good mates that I was in Timor with. I would hate to think that they or any of our deployed military was there for no reason.

To everyone else: Please dont take this as a US bash as its not, I simply think you guys need to remember that you arent always the "only ones" doing something. The Australian military currently has troops deployed to many countries especially in our region trying to contain or assist with problems such as  military coups, civil unrest and terrorism, perhaps your media needs to take note that there is a big bad world out there that the rest of us are also living in. I know when I watch the world news here at home I get reports on America, g
Germany, England and anythibng else of signifance happening ANYWHERE in the world.

Cheers.

Want to know what will happen in Iraq? The same thing that happened in Vietnam.

The media discouraged Americans about the Vietnam War (ironically, it was around the time things were actually starting to get better, with the end of the Tet Offensive delivering a hard blow to the Vietcong and such), and today the same thing will happen in Iraq. The majority of media coverage in Iraq has been negative since about three months into the war, and those reporters only report bad news, because bad news sells more than good news.

That's basically what news in general is.

It's not the media that lost the Vietnam war, get over it.
