I know that the word "poppycock" is synonymous with "hooey" (meaning "nonsense"), but what are the origins of this word?
The origins of poppycock are rather good to have in mind when people accuse you of being too polite.
Despite its reputation as a somewhat old-fashioned word for 'nonsense', the sort of word fogies in Norman Rockwell paintings might have uttered, poppycock is etymologically right up there with bullshit. A borrowing from Dutch, poppycock literally means 'soft shit'. The first element is cognate with the English word pap 'soft food, as for infants' (and hence 'anything lacking in value'), and the second element is cognate with ca-ca, the baby-talk word for excrement.
Poppycock is an Americanism, first recorded in the early 1860s; it seems to have spread to England by the 1910s. It is thus earlier than other English excrement-related words meaning 'nonsense', such as bullshit or shit.
The word hooey, by the way, is first recorded in the early 1910s; it is of uncertain origin but does not seem to have originally referred to excrement, though it did develop this sense much later.
