In game--> M16, has tons more control with 3 round burst and is better at longer rangers
still G36E>M4>M16>AK101>AK47>G3>F2000. I thinks thats all

Real life--> AK- 47 or other versions, easy to operate, easy to make, quite accurate, reliable
In real life the M-16 is more complex and when it was first made jammed constantly, us an M4 instead. M16 is much more versatile than AK.

But G36 pwns all, in and outta game

Ingame : AK47 > M16\AK101
RL : I'd rather pick up AK-103  . Why ? - Modern technologies + old nice heavy 7.62 ammo . Or G36 ( not (E)xport mod though ) or M16A3\A4 . Both are reliable & accurate guns .

p/s I'm sorry Brits , but L85A2 is peace of shit in RL unreliable ; not so accurate as everybody think - without SUSAT scope it is harder to gain same accuracy as M16A2 )
Though I like how it looks like the most ; but in RL I'd never pick it up .

We must also consider the context in which they are mainly being used against each other. For the most part, nowdays, combat occurs within an urban environment. That being said, combat would rarely take place outside of 300m. This means that the distance .vs accuracy is pretty much irrelevant.

That being said, the Ak family is extremely durable and can take a beating - something that the M16 can't. Also, it uses a larger round. For this reason, I think the AK is better... and oh, it's got an awesome firing sound.

I never estimated the power the AK-101 until I got SF. In one day I got all my veteren badges bar one, and the AK was immensely accurate because I was shooting at guys parachuting down - only 2 shots needed.

So in short, I'll also use the M16 - but I'll always try and find an AK101 to blow some heads up with! Love the gun.

You don't know what you're talking about. The 5.56mm round actually does MORE damage than the 7.62mm round, due to the tendency to yaw and fragment after impact. It's also lighter and more accurate, which is why EVERYONE now uses it in modern assault rifles.
If 7.62mm was better, it would be used more. The only things that do are sniper rifles, machineguns, battle rifles, and cheap AK clones.

I might sound like an idiot cause I know nothing about guns.. But what is the difference between an assault rifle and a carbine??

A carbine is small and compact for CQC. An Assault Rifle can do a little of everything.

^^^ That is about the best definition you will get out of me this early in the morning.

An assault rifle is something like the M16; reasonably long range, but large and a bit heavy and awkward in an enclosed space.
A carbine is like the M4; the same thing only with a shorter barrel and possibly a folding stock. Lighter, smaller, but invariably less accurate and shorter range.

Another interesting tidbit is that the step up from an assault rifle in range and accuracy is called a battle rifle; usually using larger ammunition, like the M14.

AK 47 by far....1 hit kill to the head.. extremely acurate and good rate of fire for close range too. This guns destroys all.

The appeal of the AK is the fact that it is simple to operate (which is good for militias) and is also cheaper to manufacturer.

The power aspect is negotiable since a round from an M16 causes great damage by having a higher velocity (bouncing around internally).
In times of crisis if i were on the run, I'd take an AK for its durability and tolerance to abuse. In the military, the M16 hands down.

You don't sound like an idiot at all.  I also didn't know until recently.  I know this has been explained a few times already, but another example that surprised me was the following:

G36C - Carbine; Shorter barrel for CQC, short range
G36E - Assault Rifle; Longer barrel, heavier to carry, better at longer ranges

Personally I used to think it had more to do with how the weapon functioned but it's more about the size.  I would suggest taking a look at the Wiki on the home page of BF2s.com and look under Weapons.  Should find a lot of info there for the weapons in BF2.  It gives real world info and in game info.  Very helpful.
