Here's the thinking:
The 7950GT is awesome! Its the second to the top, and is totally cool. Plus, its half the price of the 8800, which supports a software that is no needed (DX10).
On the other hand, the 8800 is the next generation and I should get it now to prepare for Vista, etc.
Which one?

BTW, my budget is enough to just afford the PNY 8800GTS-- or 1GB of RAM and an XFX 7950GT overclocked.

Since DX10 is still in its maiden days..I would go for the 7950GT, just because DX10 hasn't developed enough yet IMO...most games aren't even build for DX10 and therefore I would wait it out atleast untill the transition to DX10 is inevitable..

Go for a 7900 or 7950 right now, get the Gig of ram, and wait till Vista and DX10 Games are released to upgrade to a 8800 or other DX10 card.

Thats what I'm doing.

I heard Vista eats alot of ram, so another Gig can't hurt.

What have you got atm?

Go for summin like a 7600 / 7900 GT to save the cash (theres no point splashing loads in what is really old technology)

Get the Gig of ram (Vista will <3 you for it).

Then upgrade to DX10 (when it becomes mainstream).

I already have an X850XT PE. Will the Crossfire Edition of the 1950 work with that, ro does it have to be the same card?

You need the same card, otherwise the 1950 crossfire edition will underclock it's self to the speed of the 850 which aint good .  Isnt the 850 AGP anyways :S

The ATI X1950XT is king of DX9 card's so if you dont want to make the leap into dx10 just yet that is your best bet I think.  Nvidia are releasing another card by march, and ATI are to, over the next 6 months there will be cheaper and more expensive cards for dx10 gaming.

By the way, if you look hard enough, you can find 8800GTX's for only $50-100 more than the GTS.

Wait until DX10 becomes more common, then the hardware to run it will be cheaper.

That would be a waste of money buying that card. Your better off getting a 7600gt since there under 100 now until more 8series nvidia comes out or get the 8800gts the gtx and gts are overkill at the moment but for under 400 its the best card for the money right now. Your better off getting the DX10 ready card it will save you a lot of money in the future. Do 7100s exist anymore?

Disagree, it's a great price/performer (even if it is pricey) dx10 wont be completly manditory for 2-3 year's yet, and it will be atleast a year till dx10 only games become a common sight, so for this period of time, it be best to run super smooth.

Anoucement before end of Q1 and I suspect theres going to be a 7600 equivilent for the 8 series, but its most likely to be a superior card to the 8800GTX to fend off ATI.

You don't need an 8800 to 'prepare' for Vista.

Wow! Superb graphics for 43$!!!

So should I just save my money and buy a DX10 card when they get cheaper? How long will that take?

My order of preference for price:

7950GT - Half the price of a GTS and one of the greatest performers today. This could easily be sold and the money used for an upgrade a few months down the road. Go for one of the 512MB versions (I love BFG Tech).
8800GTX - A great card, but still in its infancy. Full DX10 support is still a ways off.
8800GTS - Might as well go with the GTX if you're going to pop dough for an 8800 today.
