I haven’t been able to find information on the largest lawsuit in history but I’m sure this one is right up at the top. The RIAA (yes, I was just as shocked as you ) is suing the website AllofMP3.com on behalf of EMI, Sony BMG, Universal Music, and Warner Music in the amount of $150,000 for each of the 11 million songs that were downloaded from June to October of 2006. That comes to a lawsuit totaling $1.65 trillion!

For those of you who have been hibernating for the last few months I’ll give you a quick run down on the excitement that AllofMP3.com has had. They are a Russian music website that operates legally in Russia but it is deemed illegal in other countries, such as the United States, because they don’t pay royalties to the artists. The RIAA continues to do everything in their power to shutdown the site but their attempts fail one after another. The United States even went as far as blocking Russia’s entrance into the World Trade Organization (WTO) until they shutdown the site.

Artists first get fucked by the record labels, and then by scofflaw braindead members of the public who don't understand the concept of intellectual property, or don't see that what they do by downloading music like that is theft.

It's theft, yup, but if the record companies didn't charge so much for the records and the artists didn't want millions in the bank, not so many people would download for nothing or for a minimal price.

Well... without much googling (actually, none whatsoever, it's 08:15 zulu):

Where will the RIAA sue them?

USA? AllOfMP3 couldn't care less...

Russia? All lawyers and court fees proportional to the amount claimed payable up front - and AFAIK according to russian law none broken...

OK, here's some fancy analogy (rather stretched, I do admit... flamers, get ready):
  • The saudi-arabian chewing-gum company gets really pissed (20 hours? 100 Whatever?? Are thiss {InsertAppropriateEthnicity} crehsieh?!?), decides to sue You in it's home country (to prevent other disbelievers from following Your abominable example), and a Mujtahidun in Jeddah verdicts - in accordance with the sharia - to have both Your hands chopped off.
  • Question: Will You buy Yourself a ticket for the next flight to Riyadh and ask for Your punishment?  OR
  • The saudi-arabian chewing-gum company sends their lawyers to {InsertYourWesternCapital} and requests that Judge {InsertFamiliarLocalName} should sentence You to have both Your hands chopped of - according to the sharia.
  • Question: Will You seriously contemplate the possibility You might need to buy Yourself an axe (just in case, so that Your {InsertMaleRelative} can execute the verdict)??

Pretty far fetched, I agree... nonetheless, think about it for a moment!

They can sue them, for example, in the international court in Vienna, under the international law.
You have international trade agreements, and if you brake them (such as dumping for example) you can get sued.
Companies from all around the world constantly sue each other. Don't think that they have to be in the same country.
What I really think is stupid is that people actually paid to download music illegally. Thats really REALLY stupid.

Why 150,000 per song? Half the songs out there today (as in the ones made recently) aren't even worth the 99 cents they cost on iTunes, let alone $150 grand. Fergie doesn't really deserve another cent for "London Bridge".

We should sue the record labels for raping our hearing.

I think this is the time when we as the people of the world should stand united against the RIAA. I have read countless stories of these mother fucking capitalist cunts suing college students and making sure they never have even as much as a dime to afford the bus to college let alone their fees.

No one on this planet needs to make $20,000,000 a year, not a record label boss, not an "Artist" (who by the way can't sing live, doesn't record their own music, doesn't write their own music and doesn't create their own graphics), not a shop online or offline, not a CD stamping outfift and not a the stupid RIAA. If anyone should be making the big bucks it should be the guys who wake up on mornings like tomorrow and clean up the vomit on the streets left by people out over-enjoying themselves, or the people who delve into our sewers to fix problems caused by our waste, do they not perform a job much more deserving of major money?

If they sold the records at a price which is FAIR, and didn't offer a select few idiots a "Recording Contract", the quality of music would be exponentialy better and more people would actually buy it.

I download ALL of my music, but it's not music I could buy anywhere. I like DJs and Artists who actually put alot of work into their music and if it was available in the shops I would buy it.
Instead, the people crying about this are idiots like Westlife, Metalica, U2 and all the other gaylords of this world.

If people only opened their eyes they might start to see the real world.

I'm sick of these bands complaining about every single friggin penny and suing mp3 distributors. There's so much out there, that there will always be easily accessible MP3s. I love that fact that they can't do anything about it because it's in Russia too. Go Russia!

I download all my music too by the real musicians and artists, and I support them by buying their albums directly from them (website etc) Record labels need to stop shitting on everyone. Not to mention the dickheads like Robbie Williams who get paid stupid amounts more than doctors, police, etc...

With so much free music available to stream at high quality, what's the point of DLing stuff illegally?  I stream the album in question a couplet times and then buy it of Napster or Wal-Mart for less than $10 per album.  Or you could just snag one of those programs that allows you to record streaming to your HD and you're set.

Wow, I agreed with you, though in truth and all righteousness they "artists" deserve there money for there songs that just about anyone could right. They sell there names, not the songs.

Well, wrap your head around this: the total monetary cost to US citizens for the war in Iraq, to date, is estimated to be around 350 Billion.  In other words, this suit is for more than 4.5 times the cost of the war in Iraq, as it stands today, and would constitute more than the entire GDP for about 60 different countries around the world.

Yep, that makes sense.

"I honestly don't believe that downloading music can be called stealing, not in today's musical climate. I just think that 90% of the music out there now SUCKS and kids are smart enough to find a way to not pay for it." I tend to agree,I wouldn't pay 15 bucks for the crap Nickelback and Eminem put out either. Tommy D.
