This is probably a dumb question but how do I get all my stuff from this computer to my new one? The new machine should be coming today & I was wondering if there is any way to get all my games & programs from here to there without uninstalling/reinstalling everything. Short of making a complete backup on one of my external drives is there an easier way to do this?

Best to do a clean reinstall of everything with a new rig. Less chance of running into problems that way.

Although I do recommend reinstalling everything so you get a nice clean rig going there is a way to "cheat".

If you have TONNES of stuff on your old drive you can just put it into the machine as the boot drive (set to Master on PATA, with SATA you must choose the boot device in the BIOS) and then use your XP disc and do a repair on the install.  It will update the Hardware DB so that your Windows loads exactly like it did before but in your new PC.

One MAJOR note though.  When you run the XP setup (boot from CD) you must use the 2ND repair and not the repair via recovery console shit at the beginning.  So choose Install XP, then it will search for existing Windows installs, then pick yours and press "R" to repair it.

This has NEVER failed me and it's a technique I use on our corporate PC images for super fast PC setups.

If however you don't have too much stuff, or you have your drive properly split for programs and data, you can just run the XP Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to move your stuff to a new drive.

i just formatted my pc and i have 3 HD's on my pc and when i try to run games from the hard drive that wasnt formatted on the re-install of xp it just came up with an error so i ended up formating the other HD but keeping my documents and pics as they aren't installed anywhere they are just files

in other words you are easier just reinstalling everything
