I just got my new computer today & after I finally got most of my stuff installed & got my drivers in order I went to go play some BF2 with the settings cranked all the way up to see what it looked like (absolutely gorgeous btw) but after I turned up my audio settings I stopped being able to hear my own voice. I can hear everything else but I can't hear myself fire or spot or any of that. Do I want my audio to go through hardware or software & can I turn that advanced checkbox on in the audio settings? It works fine when I turn it back to medium but I got a decent sound card & 5.1 speakers so I'd much rather have it up if I can.

*Edit:* I thought I had a decent sound card

I don't even really know, does cpu-z tell you that?
When I ordered my system it just said "High-Definition 7.1 Performance Audio"

Device manager is just calling it "Realtek High Definition Audio"

Ummm, it's a separate card if that means anything, onboard is part of something else, right?
Will anything tell me how it's connected or do i just have to crack the case open?

if it's a separate card, it's connected to a pci slot.  you could search in your program file for some kind of audio control panel.  or you could crack the case and take a look, it should say somewhere on the card.

if it is onboard it will be intergrated into the motherboard, and if its seperate it should be in a pci slot, best way to find out is to crack the case open

I had the 'not hearing yourself' problem with my Audigy2 ZS, when I use 4speakers+CMSS to switch between headphones and speakers (as the geniuses didn't think to support standard front panel audio, causing me to put headphones in surround jacks) making BF2 think I have 4 speaker surround.

Look in Sound and Audio Devices in CP, and make sure its nothing but Desktop Stereo Speakers (ie, Stereo).

There might also be settings in the Realtek manager

Have you looked inside your case?
If it says realtek I'm pretty sure its onboard. You may have a separate card in a PCI slot as well and you might not have the drivers installed correctly for it. Even if you have a separate card, the onboard audio may be selected as the primary sound device. I would look inside and familiarize yourself with your components. Be sure to power the machine of first .

alright it must be in the motherboard because it's not in a slot. I just found out how pretty my RAM looks though , totally unrelated but is Patriot RAM good?

@Cheez, the Realtek thing lets me change what kind of speakers I have but for all of them to work I have to put it on 6 channel then only 2 speakers work

So that's not it?
Wow do I look like an ass or what?

The motherboard said fox something if that helps, it's kinda in the corner in a little slot (the computer is) so it's a bitch to get in & out but if you really want I'll check it out

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php run that and click on main board.(Look at the model)
It will also show your memory timings. They will probably be 4-4-4-12 if you have the low latency patriot modules.

Edit:Also look at your bios version.

Must be Alienware custom made. What does the manufacture say under mainboard? I have had 2 Alienwares, once they put an Abit board in there, the other time was an Asus.

Edit:Your memory is probably dual channel so actual you are running at 800 MHz.

Yw, one last thing if you are using CPUz. If you click the "about" tab and do a registers dump it will create a file with all your information. Here is an example of mine http://stormsurge.us/cap/cpuz.htm .
