I was recently thinking of upgrading my PC with around a £150 budget with either:

Intel:
Asrock 775DUAL-VSTA
P4 820 Dual Core

AMD:
Foxconn Skt939
Athlon64 3800+ Venice

I know its a battle of AMD vs. Intel but i wanna know which one you guys think is best.

Also i have heard that when installing a mbo and CPU one needs to reinstall windows etc, i would like to know if that is true and if there is anything else i may need to know upon installation.

Thanks
Ed

Go with Intel. You'll be a lot happier in the long run. No. When I installed new ram and mobo I didn't have to reinstall anything. However, if your harddrive/s are SATA you'll have to install the drivers first, etc. All explained in your mobo book... then you'll just have to do a standard mobo setup and you'll be good to go.

If the chipset of your current mother board and the new one are simliar you might not have to reinstall, but if you're going from a Via chipset to a Nforce chipset board you'll have a hard time keeping your existing OS working after the upgrade.  It's better to do a clean install.

As for AMD vs. Intel... My $ still goes to AMD.

Everyone here likes intel but trusty tom says the X2 3800 choice is much better in most choices, for an extra £15. Is Intel still better?

And what about the long run, will AMD break down alot?

Oh my god, never buy the 8x0 series from Intel!
Oh my god, never buy an ASRock board!

My personal opinion: Save some more money and buy a whole new PC, or at least some core2duo thingy with a fitting mobo...

You probably don't have to re-install windows, but you have to activate it again through internet or by phone. And if you have a brand name PC (not custom build) you may have to buy new copy of windows 'cos it doesn't allow you to re-activate it, I had when I changed my mobo and CPU.

Actually, the C2D is better, but we are talking about a Pentium here, so Id go with AMD.

That board supports core 2 duo. Take that into consideration. If your not gonna upgrade for a while, go with AMD.

Heres how it goes
