forgot to mention:
this setup is vista ready.  it will play bf2, 2142 and any other game very well on a reasonable monitor.  If you don't dl too much porn, that HD should be plenty big enough.  The mobo is not SLI capable.  Any kind of upgrade in the GPU would require a better PSU.  The only thing possibly lacking in this system is the sound.  The onboard is sufficient.  but an upgrade to this:

what ever you do, don't go buy that book newbie is trying to sell you, he must know the guy  who wrote it or something.  i don't know much about computers, but was able to build one myself.  it's just a matter of reading what type of components your mobo will support (intel vs. amd, ddr vs. ddr2, agp vs. pcie, etc.)  after that its just plug it in or screw it in.  later, if you want, you can start to learn what 64-bit, dx10, overclocking means.  but it doesn't sound that you want to, no prob.  a $1000 will get you a computer that will last you at least a few years before you'll want to start upgrading.  by then you'll have learned how.  good luck and hope you find what your looking for.

ok so im not sure if i can use anything from this pc that i have right now.....i mean it is slow as hell with a pathetic graphics card. anyway heres my specs off my xfire page.......

Actually one thing that still would be useful is that processor.
It still a good CPU and will run most new games with good backup ( rest of the main unit ) at above average or high settings. BUT it is over-dated it's Socket A processor and there is no new boards for it ... etc. In this case sorry but you actually can use only optical drive, HDD, maybe speakers, monitor... etc.  But mainly that PC sucks. So build new one from scratch. If you have cash issues don't buy everything at once and be patient, just plan it well don't rush. Good luck.

@ parker, the monitor is always useful, even if you just want to run a 2nd desptop for BF2cc etc

Wtf...no, dude, I don't know Scott Mueller. But did you even read the book? Even glance at it? If not, how the Hell do you justify slamming it? It is an excellent reference, and is on the shelf (in one edition or another) of every tech pro/student/instructor I know personally. How exactly do you logic chancing a $100+ tech bill as better than having answers at your fingertips (rather than scattered all over virtual creation) for $40? Of course, it doesn't nullify parts research (usually on enthusiast sites), but it'll make troubleshooting all the more easier.
