OK, as before I've said brand new system..Intel c2d... blah blah blah.

I have been overclocking for quite some time now, but I seem to have a problem going over the 2.86G mark. I have been trying for ages to try and get it past this mark. When I try to go past this mark, the system POSTs, but it doesn't recognise the HDD is there and so it says that there is no boot device.

So, being clever I googled this and found that the PCI clocks might be too high. I set this to be locked at 33.33MHz and tried once again, but to no avail. It must be something to do with the hard drive, but what is it? :s

An help is once again appreciated,

The only time I got that where it told me that I needed to insert media with a boot partition was due to the memory set to agressive

I assume you have good memory??

Have you raised the voltage above stock? Maybe it needs to be bumped a notch to run at that speed.

Also, is your memory running on a divider? Otherwise it's running 1:1 with the CPU and being overclocked too, maybe it can't handle the extra speed.

Ok, I'm not the expert with cmputers and did not put sufficient efforts into discovering what overclocking is excatly, can someone enlighten me and tell me how I could overclock my cpu? I have 2.42 GHz AMD Athlon 64 processor, 1 gB of RAM, Nvidia Geforce 7800 gt 256 Mb or ram. It would be very appreciated.

u have 256mb of ram?

i thought my 768 was bad ..

umm yea overclocking is done in oyour BIOS you need to go into advanced settings and overclock it manually

dont do auto coz its gay

That's his video card, he has 1GB system memory.

Redkill, if you're new to overclocking, read a guide 1st, like:

I think the board is overheating or needs a voltage boost a bit.

OK, the stock voltage for an E6400 is 1.3v I think. I tried 1.4v but did nothing.

Now I'm probs gonna get owned by ppl saying "THAT WAS TOO MUCH VOLTAGE OMG U GONNA DIE!"

Ok then, so what voltage do you recommend?? lol

667MHz but the divider only allows me to have 525MHz at my current speed.

Higher voltage is ok if your CPU is adequately cooled. What temperature is your CPU getting upto under load?

A 6400@2.86GHz isn't bad anyway, what mobo chipset are you running?

Can you run your memory unlinked so you can clock it a bit higher? What are the timings looking like?

Under load, about high 30's. It's an Intel chipset, erm the mobo is an asus P5LD2. What you mean by memory unlinked? How do I do that?

Even if I was to solve the memory thing, if I go over 2.86, will my hdd show up?

Yes. What you should do is up the voltage on the CPU and northbridge.

You were talking about your memory running at lower speeds because of the divider settings. If your mobo supports it you can unlink the memory and CPU clocks. Your temperatures seem pretty low, mine hits about 50C under load, so you should be able to raise the voltages a bit. I wouldn't go much past 1.45 though, that's what I run my 6300@2.8GHz at.

Which C2D? E6400?

Assuming it is the E6400 :
266 x 8 = 2130
300 x 8 = 2400
400 x 7 = 2800

Set PCI Express Freq. 100MHz to lower chipset strain etc. Up the vCore to say 1.325 (+0.025v - or even less recommended) and start to raise the FSB more. What processor do you have, and what do you want to get up to?

Another way you could do it is:

300 x 8 to start (perfectly safe, trust me)

Might be able to bring it up to 350 x 8 before adjusting vCore. Get some good cooling and run Prime95 and so on.

400 x 8 (3200) is a push but has been done before. '6400s can hit up to a 550FSB so even take down your multiplier to 7 and do 500. That'll be 3.5GHz.

OK cheers for all this dudes, but how do I go about lowering the multiplier? Coz I thought it was locked on an E6400.

If it was, I'm assuming the multiplier is the ratio between the FSB and CPU, must be. If I lower that, then won't the memory be more strained?

Yes it is an E6400 I just wanna see if this thing can reach 3.4G, it's just knowing how to lower this multiplier thing.

So, how do I go about unlinking the memory and CPU clocks?

Seems, noone knows - but i'd also like to know this, for a friend of mine owns an E6400 too, and 300 x 8 without memory overclocking would be neat (Memory runs at DDR2-800)

I've got my 6300 running at 400x7. Memory running at 800 unlinked.

You might not be able to, depends on your MB.
