just wondering how often this happens to other people.

occasionally, maybe a couple times  a month, my ping will go absolutely through the roof when i'm playing on any type of server. i'll start off at 50 or so, and then about 3 mins later, i'll be fluctuating all the way up to 500 or so, bouncing all over the place. it's not a big deal, i can play something else, but it can get annoying at times especially when i'm really in the mood for bf2 or bf2142. it doesn't happen often, but i'm wondering if i should bother calling my isp, or just deal with it.

I get huge spikes, nice around thirty then I start to lag. Hmm look at my ping and its through the roof! ussually either comes back down and stay or bounces and I get kicked.

Just live with it. Chances are, with it being an intermittent problem, if you contact your ISP they'll check the line and tell you there's nothing wrong with it.

You could always try telling them you are changing ISP due to the probalem and then they'll probably sort it out.

I used to get that until I changed ISP.  I'm now back with NTL and the service is totally reliable, no lag spikes and no disconnects.

It might have something to do with getting internet over the telephone network, which NTL don't.  So if you change ISP it may not solve the problem - it could be a problem at your end or at the ISP's end or it could be just too many people wanting to use t'internet and telephone at same time.

good thoughts. i currently use roadrunner through a cable modem, without it being split to a tv or anything else. i might just deal with it, unless it gets worse.

You have to learn the rules of the game and then you have to play better than anyone else.

Oh I know that strange feeling when playing at nordic servers - I used have about 60-80 there in comparison to 2-40 on Middle-European servers and over the last weeks I noticed my ping raising constantly to almost 200. I got no clue what it is.

Funny sidenote, a clanmate suffers 100+ pings with his 16Mbit line even on regional servers (Still, he doesn't seem to have any disadvantages...)

If you are really suspicious about maybe some hacker or spyware using up your bandwidth you can try:

Start->Run

cmd

netstat

^ Will show you all active network connections. Close anything that uses your internet/network IE, xfire, aim, etc. before hand.

Just last week I had some spyware company using my computer and bandwidth to send other people spyware, it happens alot to XP computers with no firewall on. It takes less than a minute for a new computer connected to the internet with no security to get attacked.

If you do find something suspicious you can porbably block the IP or domain name in your router's settings.
