I know several of you out there will not find this very helpful, and if that is the case go install gentoo.

I just want to preface this by giving a little background about my Linux using experience. I have been messing around with different Linux distros for the last couple of yrs. I started using Linux full time on a old laptop I used for school work. At that time I used SUSE. I finally broke down and bought a macbook pro a while back so that laptop has been tossed in the trash. At that point I didn't have a machine running Linux and I slowly started noticing that there were certain things I missed. A few weeks ago I broke down and reformatted my hackintosh(if you want to know more about that little adventure pm me) and installed Ubuntu 6.10.

If you have never had a chance to play with a Linux distro this would be the one I recommend starting with first. I know some of the more hardcore Linux users out there will scoff at this idea. I believe though that this distro is the best one for people new to Linux because it has the largest support/knowledge base.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to do in order to properly set up your new install. I highly recommend installing easyubuntu. This little utility will help new users to easily update their video card drivers.

Finally, if you don't like gnome you can always use kubuntu which is a kde version of the distro.

Agreed (even as a Gentoo user)

Ubuntu is fantastic to start learning about Linux with - Incredibly easy to install with good support due to its forums.

I do however have to recommend Kubuntu over the standard install - KDE kicks so much more ass than Gnome it's just not funny...

I first started my Linux days on Slackware 8.1, man was that a bitch learning the most UNIX-like Linux distro out there. I'm proud I started with Slack, it's still the oldest running Linux project to date. I now work as a UNIX-Admin and manage 120 Boxes, 80 Fedora Core 4 boxes (print servers) 20 AIX and 20 HP-UX boxes. I'm happy to see fellow *NIXers here.

Slack 8.1?? Wasn't that after they had a fully automatic installer?

Props for the HP-UX though, most linux fanboys are scared to touch that or sun/solaris because it scares them. Linux still sucks though, bsd has always been better

That's why I always enjoyed MAC, the common idiot can't run it, MAC is based from DARWIN UNIX. Most people can navigate/get around MAC with no issues, they don't realize the full potential the OS has to offer. Albeit I do totally agree with you about the look of the MAC's I've owned several in my day, every one was Sophisticated, elegant  and sleek.

Solaris isn't linux, but yeah. I picked up an x86 version back in the 90's and that fun spending hours to get hardware to work and then figuring out its only good for routing/mail servers.

wo0t for SPARC! I actually used to have a FreeBSD box running my NAT table VIA IPCHAINS, it's outdated now, so my new box is; 233mhz it's my RAID/NFS/IPTABLES box, wrote the NAT all by hand I take much pride in my network routing table being written by hand. Oh yea, I also host TS on that box, right now my array is; 4x500 gb IDE HDD's I'm running RAID-1 (the box isn't fast enough to handle RAID-5's on-the-fly redundancy checks). It does well, I have a moded xbox on the big screen so I can stream my movies/mp3's etc.
