ok so my pc is all ready for 64bit but i wanted to know what advantages does 64 bit has over 32bit and the disadvantages other than the drivers prob, karma will be rewareded
?
You said it yourself m8, the driver problems are a bitch @ the min. I'm holding out on the 64 till I know the drivers are going to be available
ok so basically why wouldn't you get the 64 bit if your computer can handle it...64 bit drivers for vista will come out soon

Yeah the drivers will be available eventually but they aint @ the min, thats what I mean by a bitch, you cant get them now unless you want the beta ones, which in my experiance are a load of shiitA-Unit64 wrote:

64 bit Vista will support more memory than 32 bit.
I am running Windows XP x64.
I don't regret it, but I would go with regular 32 bit if I bought a new version of Windows XP.
There is no performance increase unless you have 4GB or more of RAM. (I believe there is a small decrease if you have less than 4GB.)
On the drivers, I have found very few games that dont work in x64, and most companies have drivers for their products.

There might be a small increase of speed on the OS side (taking advantage of the hardware 64 bit instruction set), there will be NO change in performance of 32 bit applications (i.e. BF2, WOW, EQ) Vista will run these applications in a 32 bit protected/emulator mode. I have even been hearing about major Nvidia 64 bit driver issues. SLI in 64 bit mode is somewhat faster if Nvidia can stabilize the 64 bit driver API. Other driver issues will include such accessories like printers (i.e. i know that last time I checked Lexmark printer have no plans on creating 64 bit drivers) wont work w/64 bit versions of Vista. The major thing here is that for the residential users like us gamers it has no major advantages whatsoever because no programs are designed to utilize the 64 bit instruction set. I'm an IT Admin for the financial industry and no programs that I am aware of are being designed to utilize the 64 bit technology, but if they start it will be in the commerical sector first and if it is successful and as fast as designed to be then we will see programs designed to use this technology.

64-bit apps are better than 32-bit apps. Newer games will take advantage of this. Farcry is an example of one that does (with a bit of patching). 64-bit CPUs (which the x86_64 CPUs aren't really) can deal with much bigger numbers in a single operation than 32-bit CPUs. That equates to more stuff in games and better in game physics. A lot of other apps (3d modelling, video encoding, scietific programs etc) will get big performance boosts too, but only if coded to use the extra 64-bit instructions within the x86_64 instruction set.
Think of it more as a really supped up version of SSE or MMX.
I really don't think it will. It will run them normally since x86_64 CPUs still use the IA-32 instruction set, which runs 32-bit apps just fine.darthazeem wrote:

most the hardware and stuff already has 64 bit drivers on the cd and as for my hp printer they have pretty stable 64bit drivers out there, and the day vista is coming out i am upgrading to 6gb of ram (my mobo supports 16gb), and i did hear somewhere that the new photoshop will take advantage of the nvidia gpus and 64bit computing.
Keep in mind also upgrading from one to the other is not possible. You must wipe and do a fresh install.

can't 64bit read some 32bit programmes
All 32-bit programs. There are some minor driver side differences. Only applications dealing with low level hardware interfaces need specific 64-bit versions (CD mounting software for example).fatmarik wrote:

ok thanks
