I'm having some computer problems I was hoping you guys could help me clear up.  About one out of every four times I start up my computer I get a "disk read error" and it tells me to hit control alt delete to restart.  This occurs before windows is loaded and even before the screen that has the windows logo with the bar.  So I restart it and it gets to the windows screen with the bar but after that the screen just goes blank.  So when that happens I have to hard boot it and then I get the safe mode prompt.  So i go into safe mode, restart from there and then everything is fine for the next few days and then it happens again.  I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to solve this problem.

+1 for anyone who can help.

Maybe its a corrupted file within the OS (or indeed a virus), try reinstalling your OS before you go out buying new HD's, or even reformat.

The "Disk Read Error" message can be caused by virus activity although it is infinitely more likely that the drive is dying.  Get a new drive and get a tech to do a full drive copy of all your old data.  If the tech is any good you won't even notice a difference when you boot it... except that the error is gone and you have a lot more free space.

If you have access to a copy of Windows, put the CD in, reboot, and perform a "repair Install". For the best way to do this, google it and find a forum populated by techy grown ups. I have done this a few times and it has always ironed out my hardware issues.

I have had that problem a couple of times but it was due the the power cable and/ or SATA cable not fully seated on the hard drive. For some reason they have a tendency to come loose on mine?

For XP:

My Computer
Right-click on C: drive
Properties
Tools tab
Error-checking | Check Now...
