Hopefully today will bring me a check that I've been waiting 4 months for (long story) & even though everything in my computer is brand new it's the only thing (all of my cameras are in top shape, I already have more lighting equipment that I need & nothing is wrong with my car) that I can really use an upgrade for so what'll make more of a difference?

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a … 6819103861
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a … 6814130072

Right now I have an AMD X2 4600 pushed as bit to 2.6GHz from 2.4 & one 8800GTX

I think if I get a second card I have to buy a new PSU too since mines only 700watts & I think they reccomend like 1,000 so buying the processor would save me a bit of money & I guess I could get another gig or 2 of RAM or a PhysX card if I got the CPU but I have a bad feeling about those PhysX cards for some reason.

Just curious what yins think...

*Edit:* The Graphics card i have is made by eVga, does that mean the second one would have to be the same brand?

unless you're playing on a huge screen, you wont see a change with a second 8800.  and you would need a better PSU, unless you have enough 12v rails rated at enough amps, I think it's like 24 amps per rail.

if you have 1gig or less of ram, that would be the best upgrade.  dont get a physx card, right now it's a waste of money and will probably be technologically bypassed within a year or so.

CPU could be good, but only if you're already running at least 2gigs of ram.

Thank you.
Ya I have 2GB of RAM already & heard after that there's really no difference in performance until Vista comes out.
That's what I was thinking about the 2nd graphics card too, i didn't know if it could actually make a difference.
CPU then?

I'd say CPU.  or a Xfi sound card, unless you already have one.
best:

also good:

Switch to C2D.

go the cpu, although a core 2 extreme would be much faster. You could also think about speakers, an Xfi souncard(as mentioned above), a blu-ray drive (costs 1500$ last time i looked) & maybe an extra hard drive if you are running low on space.

Thanks.
I'd like to get a C2D but it just wouldn't be worth it right now for me, too much to get a good chip & mobo combo. I have an XtremeGamer X-Fi card & fairly decent 5.1 system, it would be nice to get a headset that works good & doesn't feel like knives going into your ears after an hour but I don't think technology has advanced that far yet

Btw, wtf does blu-ray do that warrants a $1,500 price tag. plus the cost of a monitor upgrade of course.

I have another question too & I did search first because I know I've seen the answer somewhere but couldn't find it. Can I get one of those 150GB Raptor drives & just not include it in my RAID 0 setup? I have 2x250GB Barracudas but would like to use one of the Raptors for boot, scratch disk, etc.

Um, does 40gb a disc sound nice to you? Cos it certainly does to me:P plus 80gb on a dual layer.

Well, In theory it is a very viable option lol. In practice, slightly less... I've had some troubles recently setting up my new 320gb WD SataII drive as a boot drive, and i mean TROUBLES. I've reinstalled windows to the drive several times, ghosted images onto it, but i eventually gave up and left it for another day. You could try it though; you might have better luck:P. I'm not really sure about the raid 0 setup but i think it should work

80GB is alot of porn
I might have to look into that, thanks.

i have a set of Logitech X-530's, and they suit me great so i'm not really clued up about headsets, perhaps the new Razer Barracuda headset?

the only drawback-u have to use a seperate Razer soundcard lol. Those Dell and Apple 30" LCD's look VERY nice, but at 3000$ Aussie its a bit much for me. Hmm i think thats about it

It is an awful lot.... or a small amount of video with high enough res to take advantage of that 30" monitor:P

OP: Everything you have is great.

The only thing you could really spend cash on is 2GB memory (if you don't already have it), a better monitor, more storage, or, as you said, a good headset. Personally, I'd just save my money.

Seems to me like your showing off to people who you don't know and who don't know you.

Get a new CPU. That'll be bottlenecking your 8800GTX. Forget about physx, it's not worth the money. Especially now GPU side physics processing is fast becoming a reality.

What CPU score do you get in 3dmark06, if it's less than 2000, upgrade CPU.

QFT, but we still have to consider that every available AMD cpu atm is bottlenecking the 8800GTX...

So I'd rather advice on keeping the money and probably buying a new system when vista is out and some of the new 45nm chips of intel are ready for deployment (about July, I guess).
Will probably be kind of a big deal for games then...

PS: Do you really suffer from bad framerates at the moment? I can't imagine, honestly...

Are you sure? What about the FX-74?

I'm not saying to get one, it's got a crap performance to price ratio and you'll have to sell your house to pay the electricity bills, but it's quite quick and might be much quicker in Vista.

C2D is the way to go.

I've seen the motherboards, dual socket L (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813131146). I had assumed the CPUs were out to go in them, seems a bit pointless otherwise. Although now you mention it and I've had a look, I can't find any CPUs to put in it.

I would go for a nice widescreen monitor and a real good headset.

What about buying a Xbox 360?

Wow. Seriously dude, he obviously works for it and just because he isn't another immature adolescent on the forums who doesn't work for shit and gets fed  by mommy and daddy doesn't mean he doesn't deserve it.

I would upgrade to c2d as others have said, or perhaps go for a tricked out case with water cooling? Neither of those options are really worth the money even if you do have it laying around, if anything hold on to it for another 6 months when the next gen of graphics cards come out.
