My dad came home today with a brand new laptop to do with his new job that he just began last week.  His employer wishes for him to demonstrate apps to customers using the said laptop.  He gave us a wireless device that picks up signals.  My question is, doesnt there need to be a router present in the area for that to work?  My dad is no tech guy and I need to have this as easy for him to use as possible, but wer not getting on the internet.  To be honest that is what I expected to happen, but his boss seems adment all he needs is that small wireless device which plugs into the USB port.  Yeah very good, but it needs to get it's signal from somewhere right?  From a router?

Sooooooo is it a router I need or what?  Help us out so my dad gives me the £20 he promissed

It's a very impressive machine btw,

Very quickly the specs are:

AMD 64 Turion 64 X2 Tl-56 1.5Ghz 1mb cache
2GB 667mhz RAM
120GB 7200Rpm HD
256 7800GTX GPU

Not bad for a free perk in your job eh? lol I am so wanting to play battlefield on it, any helps gets karma, and both my dad and my thanks

A router would make the most sense.

There are other ways you can do it, but all of them require you to have wireless hardware on each side of the connection (kinda obvious really - you won't pick up a signal if there isn't one to pick up). It's possible you could find an unsecured network in your area if you have a look, but that's a bit naughty. Or you could spend a few weeks sniffing packets off a secured network and then crack the WEP key, but that's a bit long.

Perhaps your dads boss means he'll only need the wireless dongle to connect at work, since they presumably have a wireless connection.

Yeah, sounds like you're set to receive a signal, but you aren't going to be getting one unless you get a wireless router or pick up your wireless from a public place, i.e. coffee shop

Is it difficult for him to connect to each individual customers network each time he visits one?  I mean, hes going to be switching from place to place all day long demonstrating products and such, just a case of search for connection and your done yea?  I thought as much guys (you try arguing with him, even if your right you will loose ).  Much appreciated, Karma offer officiallly ended lol cant karma everyone.

Thanks again

Not at all difficult, providing he has the WEP (or WPA or whatever) key for that wireless network.

I take it isn't one of those phone company internet receivers? Like vodaphone, you can connect from pretty much anywhere via one of those, charges like dial up though.

Ummmmmm, lol I dont belive this, I've broke the thing.........  No seriously, somethings up, it descided to freeze, I rebooted and now I cant actually log in to the OS.  It get's stuck at the part where you choose which login name to go in as, the options are sort of greyed out and no matter how often you click on them it simply wont log in.......  HELP FFS when he finds out I am so screwed.

Try booting in safe mode.

Yup, that sounds like your best bet. Try and get it into safe mode and do a system restore. Hope that helps.

Yeah. Safe mode ftw.

Wireless router = answer to start.
As long as the customers have a wireless router too he can connect up to their internet. Otherwise he needs an ethernet cable to plug into their wired router. A PC will be able to plug into any internet connection aslong as it has access to do so.

Uh oh. It's not configured for a domain based network is it? That can cause problems if you try sticking it on other networks without some prior configuration.

Could explain it, I managed to get it to boot (after taking 10 bloody minutes to do so) and tinkered with a few settings from there.  It has a list of issues, one of the weird ones is it will not play a DVD :S  I assumed perhaps it was set at the wrong region or something but default is multi region, and no matter what I try it wont play it, some strange message appears....  Will write it down tommorow, needs powering up, I really need to have it all sorted by tommorow night, and will probably need a bit more help.....  Cheers though guys.
