I'm bummed - I moved to South Texas a few years ago and my skates are rusting.  There used to be about 15 people who showed early Saturday and late night Weds to play pickup hockey.  And within that group there was about five of us who were "good" pond hockey players...the rest were a few new guys that rotated in.  New guys suck - they all have new equipment, can't skate well, and insist on checking - in a freaking pickup game.

Of the five we've lost two of the regulars.  And less and less of the pretenders are showing up to get beat.  There hasn't been more than four people for the last two months (not including the Xmas break).  So it looks like I'm hangin' them up.  That blows.

I live on the coast and have thought about surfing, kiteboarding or windsurfing.  I grew up on snow skis (old school FTW!!!) but I'm not exactly living in the Rockies...but I was on my high school ski team.  So I'm wondering if having a good sense of balance on skis will help on a board...

So I have a question - how do you get into it?  There's a nice break out on the islands, I see people out there all the time.  But is it easier to longboard or shortboard?  Am I going to buy a "starter" board and get another one in a few years?  Any recommended books?  Any recommended websites that give good info?  How long until I feel like I won't kill myself doing it?

You should start with a long-board. Something 8'6". They are much easier to learn on than a short-board. Just paddle out to start your lesson. How big are the waves anyway? Any way, paddle out past the break and just paddle. Surfing requires you to build up your arms and shoulders. Since your above the water, swimming doesn't quite cut it. Also try sitting and balancing sitting on your board. Find the sweet spot. These will take a bit. Before you try to ride a wave its better to be comfortable in the way you handle the board sitting on it. Watch this http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid … &hl=en
It'll give you an idea of what to expect in longboarding. And in how fun it can be. GOOD LUCK! Welcome to a new addiction.
