You have to pay to go to the doctor in Ireland? That's shocking, I didn't realise that. Still, I s'pose €20 isn't too much. It costs me that much to go to the dentist - which I do far more often than visiting the doctors.CameronPoe wrote:
That's funny because if I want to go see the doctor it costs me €40, of which I get half back in tax relief. If they send me to hospital I don't even have to spend a red cent either. There is also a cap on how much you spend on medicine after which the government pays all of the rest! And what you did pay for, medicine-wise, you can claim back 42% in tax relief. W00t! To be fair though, healthcare in Ireland is probably far superior than in the UK. He probably also gets seen within a year or so if he needed important surgery...Bertster7 wrote:

Socialized medicine = crappy healthcare + even higher taxes. I already have to work my ass off to pay for all the welfare bums to sit at home, now you want me to pay for their healthcare too? Piss off. Big govt socialism is never the right answer. Free enterprise works, which is why the US has the best medical treatment in the world.
Safety first. Build that damn wall already.

Could be. But I've never had any cause for complaint about the NHS. I know everyone complains about it, but I've found medical care on the continent far worse. They just try to prescribe you as many drugs as possible (in France at least).ghettoperson wrote:

As an American living in England, I can tell you that socialized health care is NOT the way to go. The NHS here is nothing more than a huge, corrupt HMO (even more-so than HMOs in the States), money sinkhole. People think "oh, free health care". What they don't realize is that an obscene amount of their income would be taxed to pay for said health care. Hell, if you took away 50% of everything I earned, there damned well better be a free band-aid waiting for me. I'd rather be able choose my health care plan and pay the "premium" on it every month, instead of risking getting sent to a crappy General Practitioner and/or hospital just because of the postal code I live in, all while having half of my hard earned money taken away from me.
My vote would go to the non-existent "Other". Other, as in, lowering inflation. If that means balancing the budget, raising/lowering taxes, etc., then so be it. What does it matter if I make $90k a year if that $90k is worth a half it used to 5-10 years ago? Make my dollar worth a damn.

you can go private here as well and it is actually at a reasonable priceDizik wrote:

I would hardly call it a money sinkhole since the NHS is supposidly the largest employer in the world
Also the NHS guarantees healthcare around the world, if you have no insurance in another country you can call home and the NHS will provide you the money so that you can still get the healthcare you need (its kind of complicated but still its healthcare and it is there)
True the NHS is broke, but it can be fixed

I love how you say "get Health Insurance." Well DUH!!!
The problem is A: Finding health insurance, and B: Being able to afford health insurance.
For you information, my mom works 12 hrs a day, 6 days a week, makes roughly 25,000 a year to support herself and my little sister, and the health insurance her work offers costs roughly $1,000 a month.
I never said that there wasn't private in the U.K. .sfarrar33 wrote:

Well then, explain to me why the NHS lost millions of pounds last year? All the while patients agreed to a decline in quality of service. =Edit= Grrr...can't find the link I had to back this up.sfarrar33 wrote:

So does my private insurance. And I don't get taxed out of the ass because of it.sfarrar33 wrote:

Can be fixed? Yes, of course. Will it be fixed? Probably. Any time in the near future? Not by a longshot.sfarrar33 wrote:

I will freely admit that there is a large gap between those with low incomes that qualify for Medicare/Medicaid/other benefits, and those that don't qualify for those programs. What makes things worse is that there are more people that don't qualify for those programs (and really need it), than those that do qualify. That is something that should definitely be remedied. However socialized health care, in my humble opinion, is not the way to go. Getting rid of shoddy HMOs/other health plans that require high premiums, and offer a low quality of service, is the place to start. I doubt it'll happen though. Too many people that are high up the totem pole are making too much money off of the sick and dying to give a shit.Elamdri wrote:

those who honestly voted for the ban on gay marriage... that's so wrong.
I know it's a hot issue that many people feel is important because of religion... but...
that is so disgusting and bigoted...
I'm sorry...

Whoever voted "shut down NASA" can kiss my ass.
Voted people control salary of government officials, I don't think it would work necessarily, but that conflict of interests is one of the more important things in that list. Others are balanced budget or healthcare.
This spurred a whole debate in itself..lolunnamednewbie13 wrote:

Balance the budget... FTW
End the welfare program
I think we should have some kind of program that gives the poor, jobs, instead of giving them free money.

Quite. Whenever heads of state need serious treatment, they leave their countries and come to the US. Freedom draws the best and the brightest. Many of our excellent Doctors came from countries with crappy socialist healthcare.apollo_fi wrote:

the budget. why?
because this generation fucked up the budget.
i don't want to pay for their mistakes.

Wow, that was classy.
I've got health insurance. It would cost me $200 to go to the doctor today. It's called a deductible. This kid's mom may just have a deductible this high, and since we're just past the first of the year it probably hasn't been met yet.
Since we're making assumptions about people, I'll assume that you don't pay for your own health insurance and are likely on Mommy or Daddy's plan. How nice.
The point of universal healthcare is that it helps out those that can't afford to pay for expensive health insurance.
You should really have added banking reform to that poll. Removing the Federal Reserve System should be the single most important issue to Americans with the predicted economic 2007 crash and depression. Fix that first, then look at those other issues.
Why you say? This short interview explains it.
