Greetings, I need some help deciding what parts to buy for a build. This isn't for me, and I want to see what suggestions y'all would have.

Here are the parameters:

$2,500.00 limit
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 Processor
nvidia 8800 GTX 768mb, BFG or EVGA
Kingston HyperX 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel (or equiv.)

those are the items which are a must, what I need help finding are the following:

1: motherboard, must be sli (only two ports) and have on-board audio
2: two sata drives at least 7200 rpm (for raid 0), or one 10,000 rpm sata
3: 650+ watt PSU
4: case, learning towards  coolermaster stacker, but open to suggestions. Friend wants very un-gaudy case with excellent air cooling possiblities.

Thanks in advance, I appreciate any help given. If anything the motherboard must be found.

If you have a 2500 dollar limit, why not get a soundcard instead of onboard audio?

I have a CMStacker and it's a fucking awesome case. (Note: This one not this one. It's huge, tons of room. Keeps everything cool (120mm x2 80mm x3), and it's slick looking to boot. Very heavy though.

I am helping a friend search, thats what i came up with so far, he doesn't want a soundcard really because he only uses headphones for the most part.

Thanks for the case link, it's exactly the one I have saved

How about:

$50 over budget after rebates. But thats because I've put in a Quad core CPU instead of the 6700.

I've just realised I forgot about a CPU fan too - the Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 is what you want.

6700/6800 will do just fine, no need for a quad core.  Getting a 6700 will save money that could probably get 4 gb or more hd space.

What do you want 4GB for? Are you using the PC for some sort of editing? It won't help for gaming.

Isn't the X6800 the same price as the QX6700 anyway?

An X-Fi (the cheap one) might be worth getting too, or some massive speakers.

1 HDD, no RAID.

975X is not as good a chipset as the 680i, by quite a margin.

$2350 with 2x Samsung 400GB and E6700.

Yes but the X6800 is the better gaming chip

It won't be in 6 months time when games like Crysis, that actually need that sort of power come out. The bulk of DX10 games will be optimised to take advantage of multiple cores. Nothing at the moment puts any strain on the high end C2D CPUs, you might as well be ready for when stuff will use it.

You can get an idea of what future performance in optimised games will be like by looking at the difference in 3dmark CPU scores.

That's 6months though, I would buy a cheap C2D now, and buy the Quad when lots of applications utilise it, and ofcourse for a much reduced price.  Wouldnt be suprised to find other credible Quad core CPU's to be available by then, or even Intels 45mm chips (or whatever its called).  Besides the 6800 is hardly going to stugle with these games, I often wondered but it is that price for a reason it seems.....

You mean like the Q6600 that I included in the original build?

The 6800 might well struggle with them. It does with FSX.

Is very nice. Especially the real time DTS encoding for the onboard sound. DTS>Dolby.

But not as overclockable as the EVGA version.

Those were the two boards I was considering, I went for the EVGA. Am now running my 6300@3.4GHz.

I recommend the V1000 line of Lian Li chassis, if you're looking for air cooling. There's much you can do with with $2500.

4gb is for overall smoothness.  With vista coming out shortly and DX10 4gb will run much better then 2.  There will be a difference when running in vista on games like crysis.

Don't the 680i chipset motherboards have some major bugs in them?

They did.  I believe all the errors are all sorted out now.

Yeah, I heard it was a software problem, so I guess they released a patch. (Hopefully not an EA quality patch...)

think it simply a bios update now.

not all versions are 64bit versions, 32bit versions will still not be able to utilize 4GB
