I am planning to upgrade from 1gb ram to 2gb, and my friend told me that getting 1gb more ram of a higher speed will actually be detrimental to my performance and I didn't believe it.... so I am asking you!

This is my RAM right now  (Right click --> View Image)

And this is the RAM that I plan on buying.

So will it help or hurt my performance?

Hurt.  Ahhh!  You must get the same type of RAM in order for it to be compatible with your system...and for it to not blow up.

Thats not true. You won't be able to run in dual channel mode, also the higher speed ram will clock down to the speed of the ram that you have now.

It will help... cuz you have more RAM so I dunno what all these people are talking about. Only thing is it will run at the slower speed unless you OC it to the faster stock speed.

But still 2GB > 1GB

So what has to be the same? Timings? Bandwidth? Frequency?

at least buy the same speed, otherwise you'll be wasting money on ram that is not using its full potential.
I guess you don't really need dual channel, it makes a little difference, for that the ram has to be exactly the same.

For it to run in dual channel mode? Everything. Same timings, same frequency, same manufacturer etc. Just get more of the same.

Running in dual channel mode makes a big difference, especially on 939 setups like I presume you are running.

Timings dont matter only the speed.

ssj3barua was right if you just buy the same speed you won't have to worry about it. But you don't have to worry anyway cuz even if you buy faster ram it will clock down.

Just get whatever is cheapest.

This is where you need Teal'c to overclock your RAM by shooting the slowest stick.

Really you should buy the same type of ram that you are running now. You could still run in dual channel mode and you wouldn't have to worry about any kind of conflicts. If you have no have no other choice then go with the Kingston ValueRAM.

Because I have a dell PC... and Bajuara said it won't run in dual channel unless I get exactly the same

That sucks, I hate prebuilt PCs, just go with the ValueRAM. You'll see a big difference anyway. Just make sure your motherboard can support 2 gigs, and if it can't, I would start saving up for a new PC. good luck.

Dell don't make RAM. Look at your RAM, see what it is and then buy some of that.

You don't need 4 grand for a computer nowadays... Just a little over 2k will get you more than what you need.

Corsairs website has a tool that helps you determine what kind of RAM you need for your model comp from DELL. From that point on, go to every place where you can find RAM for cheap. I lucked out on E-bay, I bought 2 1 GB sticks for 50 bucks. That was almost a year ago, and now I'm running 3 GB of RAM. Saved me a ton. BF2 load time was reduced drastically, hell everything went fast. Good stuff.
