Once you format what do you install? or is bf2 the first thing you put on after the drivers?

Windows --> Drivers ---> Updates --> BF2
Should I be doing it another way?

I know that my problems came about after updating my drivers, video and sound. Try installing BF2 with basic drivers and not updated. I think that was what was screwing me over all the time. Finally had to disable part of my updated sound drivers to get it working again

OK I just finished my second reformat & before applying the most recent patch it's started. I'm almost scared to do anything now
I think it was my sound drivers somehow because none were showing in the direct x test thingy, I made absolutely positively sure that I had the most recent drivers for my sound card & graphics card (the ones from the website, not the install cd).
I'm gonna apply the new patch now & try again *crosses fingers*

I think its an incompatability issue myself, relating to video or in my case, audio drivers. The manual uninstall seemed to do the trick for me but I also had to rewind to previous drivers on both my audio and video cards to do it.

Might be pointless.  MagikTrik was having a similar problem and it still happened after formatting.

Yep, I reformatted twice actually & it ended up being my audio drivers (at least me thinks) so it was needless

There really isn't much that can hide from a reformat though
