I regretfully announce that I am (almost certainly) retiring from Battlefield 2. This is not due to any form of excessive annoying gameplay (eg. Grenade Launching Excessively, etc), but because the plug has been pulled on my push to get a new computer.

My current rig (if you can even call it that) has an aging hard drive, 512 Mb of SD RAM, a P4 2.66Ghz, and a Geforce 6600GT. Due to my crappy RAM and HDD combination it takes well over ten minutes for a map to load, and recently performance has decreased to well below 15 fps.

I had hoped to upgrade to a AMD Athlon 3500, with a Geforce 6800GS, and 2Gb of DDR400 RAM. However, this afternoon my Dad told me that if my computer could run games now (It can at the moment run games from 2003 like freelancer, and UT2004), and if it could be used for school work and to surf the net that there should be no problem for me. However, if I wish to upgrade RAM I have to change Motherboard, because SD RAM is not manufactured anymore, which means I have to change CPU, which means I will probably have to upgrade to PCI - e, which in turn equals a new computer.

This is actually rather hard for me, not just physically, but also emotionally (Never thought I would say that in the say sentence as "I cant play games anymore" ) because gaming is my favourite hobby, and basically I have just been told that I have to limit my gaming to aged games from 2003, and maybe 2004. Gone are my hopes of buying FEAR (one of the new generation of games that will not run on my current pc), finally playing Special Forces, and any forthcoming Command and Conquer games.

At present this is an almost certainty.

So I would like to thank the BF2s.com team, and all of the members of the forum for giving me something to do while Im not doing school work or drooling over stuff I could never afford in PC magazines. My returns to this game may be limited to the occasional trip down to my local LAN place, or on the slim chance that my dad changes his mind.

I may continue to post on the forums for some time, until I become too jealous of all of your rants, and war stories, and decide to abandon it.

Thankyou, and goodbye

Sorry dude,

Maybe you can put your gaming time into earning cash that can be used to upgrade your machine?  Sometimes parents will be supportive of your desires, if you demonstrate that you are willing to WORK for what you want, rather than just expect it to fall into your lap.

My friend please believe that I have tried. i have asked, just this summer (ie a month ago) "Can I get a job at the bookshop" To which I got an answer to the effect of "Your not getting a job until your 17 and can drive yourself to our office (mum and dad work together) and clean it"

So then I said "I ave all of these old books and magazines that I dont use, can I please sell them at the second hand bookshop?" to which I got "What if your sister wants tor ead them when shes your age?"

Then I tried the pocket money approach. I said that Id give up my fifteen dollars a week for the next 2 years (until Im an adult) for it, cancelling out my spending power, but I though I would have BF2 through it all. I got a reply of ok initially, and in the end I was just told no.

So for the record this computer was never going to be given to me, I was always going to have to pay for it somehow

I got some tips for you.

Tell the following things to your parents. A new computer benefits your school work because you can relax for a moment and have nothing on your mind. It's proven that relaxation time between the stressfocus imroves the speed and quality of work. Therefore many companies have a policy that their employees should take a brake and not to work contioniously. Why can't you relax with games like UT2003? Your dad will ask. Tell him you made friends on bf2, tell him that bf2 is the game that relaxes him. UT2003 is old. A new rig can hold out for four years. If you decicde to maintain it well. It's common a computer only lasts for four years. In college, you get a notebook. After four years you get a new one.

Another tip: Earn your own cash. I don't know what your good at. But I design webpages and stuff like that. I have a notebook where I play on, I have the settings all on low, it takes me 2 min. to load a map. So i'm not happy either. (More happy than you I supose ...) but I will work for me new rig. First a car, then a new computer, then a condo.

Tell your folks that they need a new computer too, because each day, internet pages are becoming more dynamic, and if you still use your pc one year from now, you cannot view some pages.

Last resort: We all will tribute one dollar/euro/yen/w/e for your new station.
Who wants a new rig too? Tribute your 5 webcents!

Saw your post just now.

YOU CANT HAVE A JOB? WTF! Thats evil shit dude. Tell your parents it's healthy for your developemnt of coinsienceness and responsibilty. You will get spoiled. Tell 'em. Weirdo folks you have.

mmm....
i have a 2,8 ghz pentium 4
512 ddr-Ram (333mhz)
Geforce FX5700LE 256TD - 256Ram
80 Gig HD

i play on medium with the dynamic things turned off
it loads in 3 a 4 minutes and it plays crappy for the first 2 minutes after that i runs smoodly
so i aint complaining about my 700 euro costing machine it runs and it looks good for me thought.

upgrading ur stuff is an option but not always a wise one...it can cost u more that u prefer too. like upgrading ur HD, Ram and CPU. can cause some conflicts ... when u change the ram from SD (Crap ram) to an DDR u must also change ur Motherboard (coz of the old one only supports SD ram types)  ... buying part can cost u more then buy an whole new machine. when i was playing game on my old Pentium 4 (1,7 ghz, 128 RDR ram , 40 gig, Geforce 2 440 mx 64 mb) i was thinking about upgrading it ... but a 512 RDR ram cost me over 400 euros because it was the best ram but also taken out of research. so 512 ddr ram then? well costs 120 euros for the DDR , and 210 for a good Motherboard so about 330 euros and i had upgraden only 2 things!? Fuck no to expensive....new pc well (things shown above including DVD, CD-R, ASUS P4P800S motherboard) costed 771 Euros .... well, i bought it in august 2004 and i play BF2 on medium....i,m so proud of my machine that it didnt dissapointed me.

the best thing to do: Get a job (or i u have one) save for a new PC.  and make one customized to ur preferences. and dont waste ur money on UP TO DATE too expensive parts its not worth it.

Hey Sharky,
This will not do!!  There may be an out.  Have you tried Ebay?  I have a two month old daughter and wife to support so don;t have cash to throw around, but have found Ebay very useful.  You could easily get some SD RAM and a hard drive very cheap!  At least with more RAM and Hard Drive you could boost perfromance to a playable level.  If you parents can't help out, try selling some other stuff (other than your books & Mags upur sister may need).  Got any games, PC hardware etc you don't want..list them on ebay.  I have sold broken P133Mhz laptops for $100+ (usually to country PC shops looking for parts).  You'd be amazed what people will buy.  I listed all my old crap (fireplace, VCR's, DVD Players, DVD's, etc) and sold the lot for $2000+.

Don't hold it against you folks, they are thinking of all the things you and your sister will need until you finish school and join the workforce...and there is only so much cash to splash out.  My folks would not let me get a job until I was 17 either (and then if my school suffered I had to quit).  This was not to do with them being wierdo's as one suggested, they just wanted me to put all my effort into schooling

Don't give up on them either.  Talk to them about selling your unwanted things on Ebay (you'll need a credit card to set-up anyway).  How long until you are 17?  Tell you're folks and all your relo's you would like cash for your birthday to put towards your system upgrade.  Easter...no Chocalate for you, just $10 bucks will do to your PC fund!

Don't piss your folks off though, talk nicely about your ideas to generate some cash for your upgrade (as you have already done).  Ths will demonstrate your commitment and how badly you desire it.  I usually found with my folks that when I did this, they saw the desire and the reffort I was making after after a while came to me and said "It's obvious I really want it, so they will put in $1 for every $1 a make"

Don't give up dude!! Keep hammering away until you realiase your dream.  If John Howard can make it to Prime Minister of Australia, and Arnie can become Governor of California, then you my friend can get your PC up to a BF2 playable level.

By the way I love Freelancer (Played all the prequels Wing Commander 1, 2, 3 4 & prophecy as well as Privateer, Privateer 2 & Starlancer).  I actually just relaoded it and started playing again (when my squad budDes aren't on BF2) last weekend.  Does anyone still play this on-line? I actually never did, so if you are looking for and online battle in freelancer, count me in.

Good luck with the upgrade funding.  Hope to see you on the battlefield for years to come

Go to Ebay or something, if you're looking for extra RAM.
I won't be expensive.

Here in Holland, the youth can make some money by washing cars or do some work in the garden.
There's always something to do for a few dollars (euros).

I have a AMD 3000+ (2,1 GHz), 512 RAM and Geforce 5700. It works fine for me.
Loading maps could go quicker, but I don't mind.

I'm a First Sergeant now with 25000 points all on this computer.
It's how you play the game after loading the map!!!!

Good luck and don't give up BF2 so easily.

as said in a few other posts....AMD2400, 1.3g mem, FX5700ultra.....etc etc...1mb broadband, and i run 2 computers networked other comp is AMD2600, 512mb mem, FX5700 (standard)....this second computer takes ages to load maps up and is a little laggy at first.....so ur system is not crappy u just need to add more memory.....£50 for another 512, try to get at leats 1.3gb of mem cos windows uses somewhere around 256mb....so 1.5 gigs and u should see a good increase in FPS and loading times.....sdram? I guess u checked out the web...pretty sure PC world is still selling sdram...PC100, 133....i got some sdram knocking around a couple of 256 slots , will have to check...not sure if they work i just upgraded and stockpiled all the old stuff..
