New Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees announced:

Van Halen
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
R.E.M.
the Ronettes
Patti Smith

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five will be the first rap group inducted into the hall.

To be eligible for the hall, an artists first single or album must have been released 25 years before nomination.

Given this info, would Eminem or Dr.Dre be destined for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame one day?

Second, how do Rock fans feel about GrandMaster Flash being inducted?

I pesonally think the music is gay, but it has proven sustainment and has been a major influence on other artists. So I dont see voting for them a problem. After all its not about preference of music, its supposed to be the artists contributions to the music industry over the course of their recording carreers.

No, rap artists should not be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Gimme a break, does rap have to invade everything? Van Halen and R.E.M. are valid entries, the rest not.

Really, you are a piece of work.  Don't you claim to a Christian?  How nice it is of you to judge all rap artists as incapable of musical innovation and influence, which is what the hall of fame is about.

If you are going to argue technicalities, and say that rap isn't rock and roll (which doesn't matter anyway), Grandmaster Flash actually took many samples and beats from rock and roll, r&b, disco, funk and put them into a modern context in a revolutionary way, and that alone is worthy of a top spot.  then you won't hear a single note of any true rock and roll in anything by Van Halen or R.E.M., but not so for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.  (edit: and "hard rock" isn't rock and roll anyway, so on technicalities Van Halen and R.E.M. = double fail)

Yeah and I am sure Motley Crue and the Scorpions will be inducted into the "HIP HOP KILLA COP" Hall of Fame, since, ya know, it doesn't matter anyway...

And stingray, give up your faith since you are obviously racist for pointing out that rap and rock and roll are different genres of music...How dare you, you BLASPHEMER!!!

Start a rap hall of fame ffs!
Van Halen should be inducted into the "Dodgy Mullet and spandex" hall of fame.
Patti Smith & Rem are the only ones on the list who comes near and REM are middle of the road IMO. The hall of fame like The one in the UK is for anyone who didn't become famous on a reality show. Shit!!!

Hard Rock and Rock and Roll are also different styles of music, sharing common roots.  Hip Hop and Rap also shares common roots with Rock and Roll and many preceding styles, as the from the very early days it involved cutting the breaks from funk songs of many of the earliest Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees.  And anyway, as I pointed out before, style of music is not an entry criteria.  And FYI the sky just looks blue due to refraction of incoming sunlight.  Technically the sky/atmosphere has no real visible colour.

Are you serious, the sky really isn't blue???!! I also here it gets colder the higher you go, could that be true as well???

If you go back far enough you can find the same origins of everything. The point is, NOW, it is a different genre of music and should be recognized accordingly. If not, why not just call it all music instead of country, rock folk, classical, rap, hip hop killa cop etc?.........

So, why don't you give us a run down of which genres are the same as rock and roll, and which ones are "different".  Here's a list to get you started.

rock and roll
jump blues
country
rockabilly
garage rock
surf rock
American blues
R&B
doo-wap
gospel
soul
British blues
Mersey beat
mod
Appalachian folk music,
folk rock
psychedelic rock
jam
progressive rock
hard rock
glam rock
disco
afrobeat
heavy metal.
southern rock
roots rock
New Jack Swing
punk rock
New Wave
post-punk
hardcore punk
Hip-hop soul
classical
alternative rock
thrash metal
glam metal
Dixieland
swing/big band
bebop
hard bop
cool jazz
free jazz
jazz fusion
reggae
Caffeine Jazz
acid Jazz
death metal
calypso
black metal
Britpop
gothic rock
grunge
jazz
shoegazing
Basement
mento
Neo soul
dancehall
2Step
dirty pop
drum and bass
urban pop
hip pop
UK Garage
breakbeat
jungle
...and a million and one more...

And as a side point NOW there aren't any artists playing the original form of rock'n'roll (aside from the Elvis impersonators), so there wouldn't be much point in continued inductions to the hall of fame, would there?  Unless you want 1,000 new Elvis impersonators to be added each year...

UON:

Lowing already answered your post quite well, but I figured I should throw in my 2 cents.  You made two incorrect assumptions in your post.
1 - You assumed I think all rap artists are incapable of musical innovation and influence.
2 - You assumed I'm a racist because I think each musical genre should have its own hall of fame.

At least attempt some dialogue instead of making assumptions next time.  I'm tired of people assuming that, just because rap isn't someone's favorite style of music, that they're racist. For the record, rock is my favorite style, but I enjoy artists from almost every genre of music including a little rap (2Pac, Nelly, Ludacris, Eminem).  I'm not going to post pictures of my CD collection and list my MP3s to prove it.

If you think this isn't rock, you're nuts:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid … =Van+Halen

Watch those finger fly, now THAT is talent!

No hall of fame because no one is singing like Elvis? Your opinions just get more and more interesting.   Come on, every musical style evolves - the list you posted proves that.  Rap is much different than it used to be, too.  The hole you're digging is getting so deep that soon you won't be able to toss the dirt out.

Clearly touched a nerve there.  Hooray for lowing and his rational debate.

If you can't recognise the similarities between hip hop killa cop and killa cop rock, then you are about as ignorant and stupid as you come across.  But I wouldn't expect you to know that there are as just as many subgenres and philosophies in Hip Hop as there are in Rock.  And let's not forget that it wasn't just Bob Marley who shot the Sheriff, Eric Clapton did too.  Maybe you should start a campaign to have him removed from the hall of fame.

I am ignorant for the most part regarding the subgenres in Hip Hop because I don't extensively listen to it.     Rock, hip hop, country, blues and everything else you can think of have songs about heartbreak and love, but you can't say they're of the same genre simply because they have similar content in the lyrics.  That makes no sense.

Nope, Stingray made a post recognizing the difference between the two genres, just like everyone else does. Even radio stations ( since rock isn't played on hip hop stations and hip hop isn't played on rock stations) but you can't take that at face value, you have to start a campaign trying to convince everyone that knows better that hip hop killa cop is the same thing as rock.

I really couldn't give two fucks about Bob Marley, Eric Clapton, hip hop killa cop, rap or you for that matter. Nothing you say or could say is worth getting worked up over. You are making controversy where none is needed and it is kinda cute in a pussy cat trying to act like a tiger sorta way.
