I can give you some advice with the bulletdrop. You need to aim a little lower at elevated targets (in my experience)

To make sure you can see him but he can barely see you, you need to set yourself up similar to this:

By only looking at what you absolutely have to you minimize the chance you you being shot. Your head will look like a pin prick, the enemy will be clearly visible still

I know this has fuck all to do with the elevation sniping but this is a good counter sniper tactic. Without trying to sound like a big head id say I win 95/100 long range sniper duals on wake so i know a lot about counter sniping

Hope this helps.

anyone got sensible advice for counter-sniping elevated targets - particularly proned crane snipers.
Practice3.

No, it sure won't. Two things to bear in mind are this (the blue square is the true center of the screen, which we assume is the actual aim point):

And that the deviation for the M95 is exactly double that of the M24 or L96A1. So particularly if you like to take standing shots (which long use of the other two bolt-actions can get you into the habit of) you can very often miss not because you haven't compensated for bullet drop correctly, or your aim sucks, but simply because the bullet deviated to one side or up, missing the head, or down and hit the ledge beneath.

There's also the dreaded hitreg problems of course, where the bullet is bang on target but no hit is detected by the server. If you haven't seen my sniping vid yet have a look, it's subdivided into three sections, the first dedicated to bad hitreg (download it from FileFront if you want to make sure you can see the hit indications; it's not huge, 22 megs).

in retrospect having read the replies, i now have to reluctantly admit that if you haven't dispatched an awkward target after three shots, you know in yourself it's time to forget it & spot it for someone else or improve the odds by relocating; the ego has to take a back seat to common sense & your accuracy stats.
Screw that LOL

I've blown through two mags on people that something in the game wouldn't let me hit... Just the other day on Warlord this newbie support guy was prone on a roof, last enemy left alive, and I took 7 or 8 shots at him, from three different positions (two elevations) and couldn't get a hit... finally someone else stole him from me by climbing up there and knifing him

sometimes i do feel agrieved with the weapons on sf (insurgents in particular) as i feel i could take someone out with an L96A1 or M24 when i couldn't with the unsophisticated M95 or SVD.
Agreed. The M95 puts you at a direct disadvantage against your opposite number on SAS, particularly for tricky shots and at range.

I've no particular advice for guys up on roof tops, but don't abandon your M95 for getting guys up on cranes.

The M95 will shoot clean through the platform that a sniper lies on when up on top of a crane, so you don't need to go for the little bit sticking out.  Aim for the middle, where his name appears, and to hell with his "cover", you're going to blast straight through it.  Yes, you'll have to hit him again, but snipers are stubborn/stupid, and tend not to run away from their camping spot.
Right on. This only works on the gantries though, not on all parts of the crane structure.
