I'm on a server, the files load, it verifies with the server etc and when I join the game other gamers are already half way to the bases. It seems that they have atleast a 10/20 second head start. this is not a moan but i'd just like to be enlightened

System is:
Xp Home
AMD64 3000
1gb Ram
250 gb HD
AN8-SLI mobo
6600GT 128mb PCe GFX
2mb DSL

would a system upgrade increase loading speeds ?

Before you go into BF2 prep your computer. Go into admin tools / services and stop your anti-virus, spy ware and firewall programs. Go into task manager and see what else is running that you might want to stop.

Also, find the tweakguide for BF2. I'm sure you can search it or someone can give you a link. Anyway, disable those videos that load everytime you start BF2. It seems they can take up some RAM.

Finally, add at least 512 MRAM. BF2 likes to have 1 gig all to itself so the 512 covers your overhead. Of course, with the price of RAM you might want to add more.

my low end machine only take like 20 sec to load a map here are the specs

amd sempron(1.67 ghz)
768 mb ram
ATI AIW 9800 128mb
its gotta msi server board though maybe its quicker cause it has sata instead of pata.

but most ppl never get a head start on me. Im usually like 4th or 5th. my other machine puts me on the map first almost always.
eitherway ur system is in spec. maybe checking for spyware/malware might help, and like seth says be sure to stop those background progs. just use google to look up what u dont know(just search).

EDIT: BTW look in the back of the bf2 book for instructions on stoping bg progs.

i stuck another gb of ram in my machine - now i have 2gb - and i am frequently the first person to load where i play. if not first then usually second or third. so the solution is: get more RAM! while it's cheap!

Dead right, another gig will give you what you want. I used to have the same problem as the original poster....  I bought another gig or ram and now I'm one of the first into a *new* map and have usually taken a NP beofre others have joined.

As for turning off your AV or firewall, you don't really need to do that, I run bf2 with mine on and have no problems.
@ Lexace . As for my specs, they're roughly the same as yours (but with added ram )

I had the same problem. Then I upped my RAM to 2GB...WOW!!! What a difference. Now I'm always in the top 5 on any map. Also, I can minimize and go back to the game in about 2 seconds.

Yes, i experience this all the time, thats why i join 24/7 servers so that the map doesnt end right when i get in. sum people get in faster than others.

Also might be worth checking for file fragmantation on the disk you have BF2 installed on as this can seriously slow down load times.

I agree with thinner although putting the BF2 install dir in to the folder exclusion list for whatever AV software you have is the best of both worlds and doesn't leave you completely exposed if you forget to fire it up again.

A properly configured firewall shouldn't really make any difference either.

Thanks all
Its another gig of ram for me then

At one point i was trying different server locations (UK, EU & US) but still slow to join game.

I'd tried running with AV and other programs off, it made very little difference. I've even sat and opened all the ports on my router as listed in the manual.

Again thanks for the advice, i should have asked sooner and saved time.

cheers
