Here's a review of several packages (home based, not professional)

I've always been a fan of Ulead's products, particularly the more professional-oriented MediaStudio Pro (lower cost, and most if not all of the functionality of Vegas or Premiere).
(By the way, moving to tech).

I like Vegas, but I'm not real big on editing stuff.
I've used Premiere 6.5 for quite some time now, it's perfect albeit a little slow.
I'm not a fan of the newer versions though as they are based on Microsoft's DirectShow Editing Services. DirectShow itself is buggy and full of routines that have never been finished or only work under very strict conditions. This is one of the reasons you see developers writing their own filters (Cyberlink, Intervideo, etc).
Premiere 6.5 is codec based and although the work is not real time, the results are just as stunning and in many ways much better (Hollywood FX suite for example). The drawback is the price, Premiere was stupid expensive when it came out. These days though, you may be able to get one on eBay for pittence.
Haven't used Vegas or Final Cut.
Now if you want a serious system then...Avid Liquid

Avid. I've also worked with Premiere, but I just can't bring myself to recommend it to anybody. Too often it corrupts your work file or does something else that requires you to bring over your editing to a new file completely. It also hates plugins, and people hate writing plugins for it.

Vegas
Definitly Adobe Premiere for me. Also try Adobe After Effects.
