One question I have often wondered is why were the Native Americans able to make the barter system work so well for thousands of years. They hunted, fished, cultivated and traded with neighboring tribes. They had designated men and women within the tribe that had specific duties, and the tribe as a whole prospered. It could obviously not work in this day in age, but my question is would you rather live in peacful anarchy and sacrafice todays luxuries, or keep the monetary system we are all acccostomed to now? No taxes or fiscall obligation, just skill and hard work to survive equally. Im not sure but I beleive the Scots and Irish had Clans that worked in a similair fashion. Discuss which way you would live, given the chance and why.

I myself would like to try and live like the Natives. I may not be able to enjoy all of the modern day luxuries, but I think that would be a peacfull and fullfiling life. I know there were battles between tribes, but for the most part they coexisted well.

I say no.  Native Americans did not do anything with this great land of resources.  The Europeans came over here and made a country.  I'll take my luxury thank you.

Their system worked because they had no concept of ownership. Everybody owned the land and there was always enough to go around. Life was simpler, values were different. Happiness was a warm fire, a full stomach and a healthy horse. Their society was basically a string of communes that traded with each other. Then of course a couple of boats landed on the eastern seaboard and well, that was the end of that.

Matter of opinion. I look at it the other way, I think they kept this country great by what they did not do to it. They preserved the land, zero polution, nobody to govern them other than a completely non partisan council and lived completely on an honor system. You can have your pussies, liars, thieves, politicians, taxes, pollution and the Clinton family. I'll swim in a clean river on a summer day and smoke the peace pipe watching the sunset, thank you very much.
