My Friend has this computer..

- Motherboard: Asus p4p800-se  (see link)

http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3& … odelmenu=2

- Ram: Some OEM sticks he picked up (1 gig)
- Video card: Geforce 7800 GS
- Processor: Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz Vanilla

Whenever he plays game where alot of people are closely packed together like WOW and BF2 he gets really shitty Frames Per Second, is this his processor that's causing the problem, and if it is, should he get a new one, and what processor would you suggest. His FPS are great everywhere else and the graphics settings are maximized

I have nearly the same specs and I get the same problem, for me it's my RAM (I have another gig coming in 2 days tho)

probably a combination of the two. i have a 7800gt with an athlon 64 3200+, 2 gigs of ram. i can't play everything on high and get amazing fps like i've read other people doing. i think it's my cpu holding me back, so it's probably a similar deal with your friend. i play on mostly high and some medium settings to optimize my fps a bit.

that's likely caused by 1 of those players on the screen having high ping.. it could be the processor and if it is it is due to overheating of the processor not the speed of it

Gee, how 'bout getting some kind of performance monitoring software to actually find out. Or would that make too much sense?

Holy shit i also have a 7800gt, athlon 64 3200, and 2 gigs of ram!!! What a fuckin coincidence.

I can play any game on high, bf2 is maxed, and sometimes quake 4 on 'super ultra high graphics' lags sometimes. But its my processor holding me back. 2ghz is cool but ide prefer something a bit faster. But who doesnt lol

What is the type of ram that he has?  I would say that is what is causing the slow down.  Do you happen to know the speed or what type (DDR2, DDR)?

No. Someones ping does not cause graphical lag.

I would have to say yes and no on this.  Can someone else's ping effect your screen?  The answer is yes.  If it is takes player X 300 ms to respond to the server, then the server takes 300 ms plus what ever player y's ping is.  Hence the reason for multiplay games kicking because of a high ping.  Have you ever played BF2, and someone is on your right, then teleports to your left, it is most likely caused by ping.  Another example, is in other games, CS:S, you will walk over the same spot multiple times.  This is due to the packet sent from the server.  The easiest way to tell this is to see what everyone's ping rate is.

Now to the now part, player x's ping rate does not directly effect player y's computer, but the data that is transferred effects the server, and player y's screen as stated above.

Another thing that nobody has stated in the troubleshooting process is, what is your friend running in the background.  Anything that connects to the internet and/or uses resources can have an effect on his system.

He doesn't mind having to spend up to 200$.

find out the exact RAM he has now, and try to match it, with another gig, so he will have 2gig.
good luck

all he knows is his ram is running at 320mhz, he bought the sticks OEM with no labels on them, is there a way to find out?

try a program called "everest" it should tell you, not sure if you can download it free though.

i have everest home edition v2.20.405, and it tells me what brand my RAM is etc.

CPU-z will give you some info about the RAM. Manufacturer, frequency, latency, bandwidth, and it's even got a field for part number. But it doesn't display that for my ram.

Good ram for 170, its a really good deal 2gig also so your friend could have 3gigs then later he can upgrade if he wants to but the extra 2 gigs of ram will really help

That's what I have. Been using it for almost a year now and have had zero problems with it. Glad I got it when I did, they've jacked the price up.

Yeah but we are talking about FPS, not people warping around.
