I am aware, OEM's are here to make a profit but this is rediculas, my nephew is getting a new computer for his birthday, so my sister asked me to go find as good a computer as I could for them.  Self build wasnt an option, I cant do it for her (especially since she lives in the south of England) so I checked out the Dell UK site and found this:

1024MB Dual Channel DDR2 667MHz [2x512] Memory [Included in Price]
2048MB Dual Channel DDR2 667MHz [2x1024] Memory [add £129.25 or £4/month1]
4096MB Dual Channel DDR2 677MHz [2x2048] Memory [add £1,233.75 or £32/month1]

Now unless I am reading this wrong, they are trying to charge £1,233.75 for 4GB RAM......  WTF!?  I was only going to check off the 2GB as hes only going to be playing conole derived games really on this and doesnt need the highest end components, and my sisters idea of technical assistance is where does the USB port go, so I checked out dells XPS range, but ffs that is one hell of a markup if ever I saw one.  To buy 4GB of RAM at +1000mhz speeds your not looking at anything above £500 in the UK, and there chargin more than twice that for a less powerful/slower component.

I looked at the US site, and although I expected it to be cheaper there (as it generally always is) I found no such mark up on this system:

1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz - 2 DIMMs [Included in Price]
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz - 2 DIMMs [add $135 or $5/month1]
4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz - 4 DIMMs [add $435 or $14/month1]

$435 is about £220, so I mean I would of thought the UK site would be offering the same option for perhaps £300 at the very most, but £1200 ($2300+) is about the biggest rip off I have ever seen from an OEM.

Both Dells XPS 710

So finially I ask, does anyone have a reason for why that option, is so damm overpriced for what it is?  I tried contancting Dell to see if it was an error or something, but all I got was an e-mail stating basically, for high end machines, your paying high end prices, we try and stay competative (I bet they never even read my e-mail).  Making an arse of that arent they :S

Sure, though you need to scroll across to memory yourself but

UK site : http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstor … _xps_710_3

USA site : http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/ … &s=dhs

Checked the site does seem odd,I see you have 4GB, and assume you think its worth it to go for that amount, the mid range XS710 £1489  with 2GB looks good to me.

Agreed, and infact I was looking at about that price range for her, just happned to glance at the 4GB option and I thought to myself, WTF!!!!!???  And yea I went for it, considering it is faster RAM and cost £150 a pair (£300 in total), rather than friggen £1200!

There is a difference between the UK and American setup in that the jump from 2Gb to 4Gb on the US machine is adding 2 more 1Gb sticks, on the UK machine it's removing the existing RAM and putting in 2 x 2Gb sticks which I would imagine are more expensive. You're probably also paying for the facility of having 2 free slots.

It could be an error, or just 'availability.'

Never seen that specification of RAM, cost more than £200 a pair, so theres £400 and Dell's markup (then again as they get in bulk they should be getting them less than £200 a pair)  £500-£600 perhaps.  I find it hard to belive your paying something in the region of £700 for the 'facility' of the extra two slots.

Not an option over here unfortunetly, no real choice but to either self build or go for OEM.
