I am just about to make myself a new computer and wanted to ask peoples opinions on whether i could change anything or on whether this can run BF2 on high (I think it can no problem)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ (2.4Ghz)
2GB Corsair DDR2 RAM
BFG Geforce 7950 512MB
Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10krpm Hardrive
Creative X-Fi Xtreme Sound Card

My main issue is the graphics card as I as far as PCs goes I have only ever made servers which dont require graphics cards, so will that card be ok?

I'd go with the new 8000 series Video cards. They are a bit more expensive, but in the end it will be worth it

The card will be ok but I'd recommend an 8800. Also the next CPU above that one has 1mb L2 cache I believe. I just upgraded from a 4600 to FX-62 because the processor was bottlenecking my 8800 (and this new one still prolly is too )

*Edit:* Ya, the 5200+ has 2 x 1mb cache as opposed to 2 x 512kb like the 4600+

For a new computer C2D is really the way to go.

Ok the processor upgrade will cost me an extra £60 basically and the graphics card an extra £100.

Depends on your budget. if you dont want to spend so much, E6400. if you are E6600.

And also get a 8 series card, not just because there better, tehre futureproof unlike the 7950.

Agreed. Just what I was gunna say.
Also, yes, that computer can run BF2 on high. I wouldn't just be worrying about BF2 though, there are new games coming out.

If nothing else, get a Intel Core 2 Duo. The cheapest Duo is 10% worse than the best AMD.

And forget that 1 75GB 15K RPM drive, you're going to store more data than write to it.
Get 2x200GB HDDs, new games use 7GB each. MMORPGs use 17GB. Take that into account. Servers value access speed, home computers value storage space.

Bump up to the 8800GTS, its only $400( I know $400 is alot but in terms of quality vs price, its very cheap)

No real need to spend all that on the 8800GTS, new versions are being released, a cheaper 8800GTS (half the memory) and 8600 ultra's/GT's (the best price/performer) and 8300's blah blah.  Even if you do descide to stick with the 8800GTS, there is a pretty big price cut due around the next month or so.  Reckon you will pick up a 8800GTS for 20% less by easter if not more.

I'd still go for a raptor, to put OS and some games etc on, there is without a doubt a marked speed increase over a standard speed HD, I have the 150GB and after putting everything I wanted on it, I still have like half its capacity left, and an additional 320GB when I need it for music etc.

The reason for the quicker hardrive is I did some tests on my PC that I have at the moment and some times I get lag due to my hardrive being too slow. (Because its full and lots of things accessing it)

if your getting lag because of your HD, it's becuse you don't have enough RAM and are pagefiling to make up the difference.

Yeah, only uber-epenis-wankers buy those hugely expensive low capacity drives.

Go with something with some SPACE, like some Seagate 320 or 400 SATA2s.
