...Within the next few weeks. I have a question regarding video cards.
Now, I'm not a dummy, I just want others' opinions and I dont want to hear anything like"wait to get a Direct X 10 card" or "2 is better then 1."

My question is; Is a single GeForce 8800GTS/GTX faster then 2 GeForce 7950GT's?

The cost for either option is about the same and I just want to know what will give me the better performance. If the difference is within 10 frames of each other then I'll just call them even (and pick the 8800 as I can eventually add a second one).

So, what do you all think?...I'll check back in 20 hours...

GTX is.  Less sure about the GTS, I think two 7950GX2's (quad sli) are faster than a single GTS, but it didnt have a comparison to the 7950GT model.  I would expect so though (GTS beats 2x7950GT), besides the GTS is the better option I think, will last you longer certainly, and handle DX10 games better than the older DX9 cards.

Yes a single 8800GTX is faster than two 7950GT's. To be honest, the 7950GT's aren't that great. I'm not sure if the 8800GTS is better or not, but if I had the choice I'd get the 8800GTX/GTS just to have DX10.

You can't compare a DirectX 9.0c card with a DX10 card. End of.

i would get the 8800 because it is a dx10 card and will be useful in the future

8800, dx10 and leaves you room for an extra dx10 gfx card in the future if you decide to play some next gen games, eg crysis.

go for the 8800GTS man, as you said you can always pop another one in there in the future.
this way you will not have to upgrade, as soon.

Single 8800GTX may not have the better benches but from a financial standpoint its better.

Agreed, and besides an SLI'd 8 series graphics set up is ludacris overkill right now, buy a GTX over two GTS SLI, and then when that single card begins to strugle, throw in another GTX for like $150 by then, and have a 2x 8800GTX in SLI mode and own everyone in bf3143 .

Thanks every one. I was pretty sure a single 8800 series card would smoke any 7900-7950 series card. I just wanted everyone else's opinion. And as per my promise every helpful poster got kartma

DX10 card is the way to go right now unless your on a very tight budget. I myself really wanted a 8800GTS over the 7950GT, but they offered to give me $100 off, so I thought why the hell not.

Remember that the 8 series has unified pipelines, the 7 series does not. That alone makes it superior to any previous card as you don't have wasted pipelines.

Not only that, but the 8800GTX has 128 pipelines, and the GTS has 96and the 7950 has 48 total, 24 per each GPU, so its total is 96, but these aren't unified and the heat/power generated/needed is much greater than the 8800GTS. Furthermore the clock speeds are higher and there is more support for a single Video Card than a duel setup.

Woho, new Idea!

Simply get yourself (since you'll be buying this PC within the next few months) two 8600 Ultras in SLI for the price of one GTS or less!
Overall, you'll then have 2x512MB, 2x64 shaderpipes, 2x256bit interface, etc...
Well, I don't really know if this would be any better than a GTS since there's always a little performance drop with SLI systems.

Geforce 8800 GTX is faster than Crossfire X1950XTX so it is quite possible.
