I was assuming he'd be reusing his i/o devices and peripherals. If you include that stuff, you won't get the power I've spec'd. You'll definitely need to go to lesser video cards and maybe even downsize the m/b cpu combo.theknuck wrote:
do you actually know someone can build this for you. if so, what did they recommend? the only thing i think mango left out is a lcd monitor. you can find a 19" w/s for less than $200 nowadays. definately go 19" or bigger. but i like mango's setup. and all you have to do is google "install motherboard" or "install processor" and you will find endless tutorials on this. it is not hard and know from personal experience that the only way to learn is do it yourself. maybe have your buddy stand by as you do it. the lengthiest part of a build and install should be putting in and updating your OS and all your games, programs, driver updates. have fun with that $2000, it will get you far.
Raid is nice and so are 10,000 rpm drives. But for $2000 you have to decide what you want - gaming prowess or storage speed. Personally, I'd take the gaming prowess. A set of Raptors will set you back $350 minimum. That's nearly 4x the storage price I have spec'd. Hell, if you want speed that bad, throw in another 320Gb and go with a striped RAID setup, RAID 0 I believe. You won't dual Raptor speeds, but you'll be pretty close to single Raptor speeds for only $100 more plus you'll have 640Gb of storage.Bell wrote:

Thing is though, a raptor is twice the price of a comparible sized HD. Your paying for the speed, I put one in my new rig coupled to a slower bigger drive for music etc. It's a noisy thing though, I insulated my case because of it, the non windowed version ($10 less) is quiter though.
