If so what's it like.  I'm due for an unlock in a few rounds and its the only gun I can get.  Is it okay (I know its just for taking out air, and that's okay with me)?  Does it take out air in 1 shot?  Does it track the target or hit with really high velocity?  If it really sucks, I'll probably start on the other Engineer tree.

It will take out gunhips in two shots.. and thats what it can fire before reloading.. It will hit if you stay locked on..

I've heard people say that it only targets gunships, and considering having played over 100 hours of 2142 and not having picked up a single kit with the SAAW, I would say no, don't unlock it.

If you're in a poistion to unlock it with your next unlock then you can field unlock it and try it out before you waste your precious credit.

Try it out first, but I'm pretty sure you'll decide it's crap and go for something else. That said, who knows what might get "fixed" with the next patch.

I can see how it would be good to have on the vehicle maps.  If you get 2 shots before having to reload and it take 2 shots to take out a gunship (transport too?), to me, it looks like a worthwhile unlock.  I think I'm going to get it.  I like the idea of cruising around in a tank and then hopping out when I spot a gunship for the quick take-down.  I can see how most people wouldn't get it though (comparing it to the other gun unlocks, its probably the least practical).

I can tell you this for free, SAAW AA's will follow a gunship damn near across an entire map (knows off experience)

Dont know about transports but I can tell you that its a pain flying a gunship when one of these babys are on the ground..

Little hint, try standing on the roof of your titan with it when shields are down..

I never use it.... takes more then 2 hit to get a transport, that means they have the time to run away before you can hit them. And it puts you in such desavantage for the other aspect of the game. I can do more damage with the pilum.

2 missles will destroy the Gunship, but the shields on the gunship can stop them. And by the time you reload the gunship will be long gone or you will be dead. On the other hand the stationary AAs emp missles will disable the gunship even with shields deployed. And with all the stationary AA guns and walkers with mobile AA guns, and the MG on tanks I see no need for SAAW.
Also the standard AT rockets are more monauverable than AT missles in BF2, so its easyer to hit gunships with them. And the Pilums bullet is wicked fast, so its easy to hit "hovering" gunships.
And the SAAW rarely looks on Transport ships.

its an awsome weapon, great for taking the gunships out, best to use it like you would a sniper rifle, find youself a nice high advantage point from witch you can see the hole map front and back, wait for the lock on and then wait again for the shilds to go up, folow for about 5 secs then let rip, another hint try and only fire when the chopper is in a straight line as deveation from its main course can miss, always folow the chopper even after you have fired

i have played a few suez canal maps with two aa guys on those tall things and a supply box they are unstoppable
they take out all air ships including transports

It´s a pain in the ass, if you´re piloting a gunship. A real pain. But using it as field unlock does the deal, use your credit on something more worthy.
It is buggy concerning transports, as it locks on to about 2 outta 10. At best. Same bug as with the stationary AA´s.
Fact is, you´re way better off using the standard rocketlaunchers or the Pilum, cause you can do way more damage with those baby´s.
I think it´s kinda like the Clark shotgun. A fun weapon, which can annoy the crap out of a lot of your victims, but in the long run, you won´t rack up much points with it, nor will you do enough of an impact on the field to ensure the victory of your team.
Even the additional +1 grenade unlock comes more in handy than the SAAW, especially because all maps (except for darn Suez Canal) are well stocked with stationary AA turrets.

I was using it yesterday on Sidi Powerplan (titan) and I got around 30 kills with that thing only just hitting gunships and transports. (Transports kept landing at the outpost I was defending lawl).

The thing is a beast, when your transport whoring and a gunship is following you, just tell your pilot to put him on the side your on and you can shoot him down from your transport lol

I like using it, as a field unlock only... Same as most weapons, I guess.  The thing that really pisses me off about it is that it sometimes penetrates the shields on the gunship, which I feel is a major bug.  Sadly, it never seems to benefit me when I'm using the SAAW, but it often kills me when I'm the one being shot at, even when I have my shields active.  Usually, I keep it so I have the opportunity to turn my shields on a second after I hear the lock-on tone, and then I run away and hide somewhere while my shields regenerate.  Sometimes I take one missile, and it drops me down to 50 health, but I can survive.  It just seems so unfair and unbalanced that a dork hanging out on the ground can kill a gunship 300m in the air with one volley.

I'm like 100th in the world with it, and I've got to say, it's worth it you ever play Suez or Verdun, or any titan maps. Even after you begin reloading your missle still follows the gunship, I say get it.

I did that on Suez Canal once. A transport loaded with a bunch of supports, engineers, and one assault is a deathmachine for the enemy team.

I hope there will be a lock on for transports to. There are only 1 - 2 gunship per card, and you wait forever till the respawn.

Pro: With the SAAW, killing gunships is very easy

Contra: There are only one oder two gunships on the map. It takes vorever 'till the respawn, and the gunships are not realy a dangerous enemy in hte game. The SAAW can't also lock on transports, and shooting tanks, FAVs or infantry is also inposible with it.

All in all: Right in the moment, the SAAW is useluss. But maybe if we get an update, and the gunships get more dangerous.... and if the SAAW could also lock on transport shipt.... well than it would be a good gun.

But not right now.

Unless those who fly the gunship know what they are doing you might not need worry about it. This is the last unlock I'm gonna lock up so havn't seen much use for it.

Anything can kill a gunship in this game, especially those conveniently placed light poles next to a silo or landing pad. I think light poles get more kills than SAAWs.

Also, I hardly ever use the SAAW 86...maybe its time I started whoring it on a tight Titan game with tons of transports taking off, its worth a try.  If only the missiles locked on more often...damn bugs.

a good SAAW user is the bane of any gunship pilot's existence.

It is good to be in a tank and have the SAAW equipped as gunships eat through tanks very quickly. Hop out and put two SAAW missiles into them and have the last laugh.

I would NOT waste an unlock on it....yet.  I unlocked it but spent only one round playing with it....  I HAVE seen a good player camp out in front of my Titan takin out each and every choppa leaving.  Pissed them off.  After make Brig General I plan on whipping it out and playing with it....just to see what it can do.
