I am planning on buying one of these, but i'd like to know if it's worth it.

I'd like to know how much faster the c2duo chips are over the 4800x2(the lower-end c2d's)

I have:

3500+
2gb DDR corsair
8800gts 640mb
80gb hd
530w psu

I would have liked to get a Core 2 Duo but i'd have to get a new motherboard and Ram, so it's not cost effective, anyway thanks in advance for replies.

I just found this interesting article:

It seems the e6300 is evenly matched to the 4400x2, unless you are talking about overclocking the c2d.

I wouldn't say that.

In any case, anyone with any sense will OC an E6300. 3GHz on air is easy to achieve and that absolutely thrashes an FX-62 (in fact past about 2.5GHz it starts beating the FX-62 in becnhmarks and that's really easy to achieve).

bah, all this C2d talking here! I run a X2 4800+ and dont fear any of the C2d rigs in here, neither with my AMD64 4000+ rig.

With your current system the upgrade to X2 4800 is worth it. Those CPU arent too expensive at all anymore, but, dont expect a too large diffrence between you current CPU and the X2 (if it comes to GhZ)

Not sure, like you say to change to a C2D set up is far to expensive, I am not that familiar with AMD CPU's but to my knowledge 939 socket is the old one yes?  Try upgrading to AM2 (I hear it will be compatible with AM3, the boards that is) or cut your looses and just switch to the intels.

that wouldnt be very effective, if he goes AM2 he will need new ram/mobo also and then you might as well get a c2d.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

But since the AM3 will be compatible with AM2, he can save his money at the other end, making it more effective providing it is truly backwards compatible.  Only problem with that is, AM3 is a while of yet I belive, and theres no guarentee AM3 will beat intel next time round.

AM2 is rubbish. The AM2 boards at the moment won't support any of the features that have the potential to make AM3 good. I seriously doubt AMD are going to manage to catch up with Intel, they just don't have the manufacturing capacity. It won't be long till Intel make the move to 45nm fabrication processes, AMD won't be able to match that for a long time. Since Intel can fit more on a die sooner, AMD are going to get left further and further behind - unless Intel do something stupid (like putting pipelines as long as your arm in their CPUs).

That's not what I meant.

One of the key features of AM3 is the ability to utilise DDR3 memory. AM2+ boards can't do that. I think there are some other features they lack as well.
