I'm upgrading my graphic card.  I run everything on high but I want to get a better resolution since I just got a new monitor for Christmas.  I don't have enough cash for the new 8800's and I know I'll get flamed for buying something less now but they are just not an option.  Anyway I'm running a 256 MB 6800 gs I was just wondering if it would be better to get a second one of those and go SLI or buy 512 MB 7950 gt?  System specs are AMD duel core 4200, 2 gigs corsair ram, lan party cfx3200-DR mobo

possible card - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814130066

if you have any better ideas for cards around 260 bucks US just let me know.  Thanks for any help in advance.

Wait a couple of months for the new 8600 Ultra to come out. It's supposed to be priced <$200. Performance is speculation at this point, but it should do quite well.

I might even pickup one myself for a cheap DX10 fix.

Good plan.

The 320MB version of the GTS should be out sooner if that's in your budget.

But definately wait and go DX10.

tihgt. i think i might also wait for the 8600. I still have to wait for my CD to mature, so at the rate technologiy is developing, i might get it a pretty freaking sweet rig for less than i thought. and the first word is tite.

If anybody ever flames you for not having the money to buy a $600 video card ask them what their parents thought when they found out their kid was gay...

Stillhouse & Berster both know their shit, listen to whatever they tell you, they've helped me fix some of the ten million problems I've had since I bought my new computer

Another reason to go with a 8600 is that from what I can tell from pics they require no extra power, and get all they need from the PCI-e slot.

No PCI-e power connector to be seen. And the fan looks like it'd be an easy swap out for a Zalman VF900 too!

How much of a performance gain is there with the 8600 over a 7950gt 512?

I've read that the 8600 Ultra should be comparable to the 7950GT in performance.

i heard in rumors that the 8600 ultra will have half the but rate and memory than the 7950gt
i certainly hope not cause im not paying $200 for a card with half the capacity of a 7950gt. The thing that sucks though is that games will move to dx10 compatible only really soon i believe late Q3 or early Q4 or maybe sooner.

The word is the 8600 Ultra will have half the performance of an 8800GTX. By simple side-by-side comparison of 3DMark06 scores it should roughly equal a 7950GT:

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php … ;card2=445

8800GTX = 10800

7950GT= 5600

Clock speeds for the 8600 Ultra are about the same as the 7950GT, but the G84 core is more efficient.

Again, it's all just peculation, but I can't wait to see some actual benchies on this.

Doubtfall, it would be a more progressive change over than that, I mean there still trying to sell X1950XTX for about as much as an 8800GTS and your saying that will be useless by christmas?  Certainly will happen, but I think over a longer time frame.  DX10 only games are a bit off
