Do I have to reinstall Windows when I install my new motherboard? It's "Out For Delivery" so of course I've taken off work to sit at the window and like other questions of mine, yes, I could wait until it gets here & read the instruction manual but I have a bunch of stuff on my hard drive which is gonna take awhile to backup if I need to reinstall the OS & I'd like to get started now if I have to.

I would think so. You will have new drivers, etc to enable it to start windows, etc...

afaik you have to reinstall windows if you replace you motherboard. Only if you use a board with the same chipset (like Nforce 4 etc.) it isnt, with many luck, necessary. Hasnt worked for me so far, even when I replaced my Asus A8n-Sli with my A8n-SLi premium at times

So it won't hurt to try? It is the same chipset.

If it's the same chipset then just uninstall the mobo drivers, then install the new board and reinstall the drivers, that way everything gets detected properly.

It sometimes works. I've had vastly different chipsets boot successfully from old windows installs, but I've also had virtually identical chipsets fail to boot. It's never really made much sense to me so I just reinstall whatever, it's gotta be better.

So did it load to windows, or to that pre-windows screen that appears once and only once?

P.S. All those pr0n related memories are now down the drain   no pun intended.

I just recently lost my 250GB Seagate Barracuda. All of my precious files. I zapped it with static. Good thing is that it has five year warranty under their website. Time for an RMA.

It got to the windows loading screen & then right after that I got the dialog box saying I need to reregister windows but even after I got my mouse working I clicked the box & nothing happened so I figured it just freaked out about the new hardware. I might have been able to get it if I would have done the Installer CD trick thingy but I'm too damned simple for all that
Plus my computer likes me better now that I don't have 10,000,000GB of Beastiality porn bogging it down

Now in this case where would OEM come from? That term still confuses me sometimes, OEM From Microsoft (like an actual install cd) or OEM from Alienware (like recovery cd goodness)? It came installed so all I have is the recovery cd.

OEM Windows software has to be purchased with peripheral hardware also to the point it can only be used on one PC and it attatches itself to the motherboard. I changed my whole PC and it still works even though a guy from microsoft said it wouldnt meh.

Installing a new motherboard doesn't mean you need to format and reinstall Windows.

Windows uses a hardware manifest to lock the OS down to one machine.  If you change too many parts Windows won't boot and instead gives you the BSOD.  The truth is that Windows will still work, all you need to do is repair it:

  • Boot off the Windows CD and when prompted choose to "Install Windows".
  • The Setup will look for existing versions of Windows.  Choose yours and select "R" for Repair.
  • Go through the Windows setup and when done your Windows will boot because the Hardware manifest has been rebuilt with your new mobo.

Formatting is ALWAYS a last resort solution.

Edited for spelling.
