An MD-10 cargo jet equipped with Northrop Grumman's Guardian anti-missile system took off from Los Angeles International Airport on a commercial flight Tuesday, the company said.
The FedEx flight marked the start of operational testing and evaluation of the laser system designed to defend against shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles during takeoffs and landings.

Basically testing has begun on equipping civilian aircraft with anti-missile lasers which would be designed to protect the planes from stingers and stinger-like weapons during take off and landing.

What do you guys think, is this a good idea or a massive and paranoid waste of money waste of money?

Yeah I dont quite get what is with arming planes in America, thousands of miles from any war zone. That is called paranoia im afraid to say. Then again, its always good to be prepared.

I can see it would have it uses,but more likey for it to be used for military planes or goverment ones.I can't see them being used in comercial planes though probally to expensive.

Have you all even read the rest of the article? The military already uses a version of this system, and it doesn't actually destroy the missile, it just fries it's targeting system.

Yeah its a laser, directly shone at the targetting system, and messes it up due to its frequency or something.

Speak for yourself. I happen to name every bullet fired from my jet. It makes playing BF2 kind of a pain though. "Alph-, alp-, Alpha 3, uhhh, I think that was Alpha 7... Damn it..."

Well, why else are you putting anti missile equipment on planes?
