So someone has done something not worth punishing for at my school. Regardless, the teachers aren't so happy, and they have imposed a collective punishment upon us. I am going to write an article for the newspaper, and I want some numbers. SO I'm going to poll at my school, but I also want to get an independant poll of random people. So you tell me: is collective punishment OK to do if you know who the problem is? If it is, please explain. If it isn't, please explain. My personal opinion doesn't matter, because I'm just pissed.
Poll
Is collective punishment OK?
Yes | 18% | 18% - 5 | ||||
No | 48% | 48% - 13 | ||||
Only if you don't know who did it | 33% | 33% - 9 | ||||
Total: 27 |
I can be appropriate, but it depends on the situation. I can't give a certain answer without knowing the full story.
What exactly happened?

for example...
Really, it wasn't anything worth punishing for. See, as freshman, we have to go to the library for a study hhall during our free periods. Apparently some people (they know who!) weren't being quiet, and were being disrespectful to the staff, and leaving the library or never coming. Like I said, no big deal. now you know what I know (minus the names).

Wow. Then hell no. That's rediculous to keep everyone in trouble. What right does the school think they have to do that...
"Your innocent untill proven guilty"
"Your innocent untill proven guilty"
"Your innocent untill proven guilty"
"Your innocent untill proven guilty"
Never forget that.

Not appropriate and I think it sends a poor message. Let an individual be held individually responsible. It's easy enough to see how out of control a lot of our youth culture is, there's no lack of irresponsible people in our midst. So why send warped messages about who's accountable for wrong-doings? As if things aren't complicated enough. Punish the people who deserve it, and don't alienate the people who don't deserve it. It's a brutish tactic of a frighteningly lazy disciplinary/administration office at that school.
oh noes!!!... highschool kids were disrespectfull and noisy... im shocked AND stunned... what is the world coming too... sounds like your teachers are doing what teachers do best... nothing.. gotta love empty threats
I think collective punishment is only OK if they don't know who did it. You're not supposed to punish the innocent... The point of doing it when you don't know who did it, is to prove that the culprit will not get away with his/her actions. I think it's a good thing under those circumstances only. Especially when the students know who did it because of the fact that then they'll all hate the kid who did it, which will especially make the kid think twice before doing something stupid again.
I see what your saying but isnt that still against the contitution. Habious Corpus baby. Honour the flag. not to mention you dont gaurantee yourself of punishing the guilty, but you do gaurantee to punish at least SOME innocent. Kind of a losing scenario if you cheer for the constitution and innocent until PROVEN guilty.FrankieSpankie3388 wrote:

Now tht ya think about it Bush dont care bout the constitution anyway. Scarp it. JK!!!!!!!!!
I think in this case it's inappropriate. They've found out who did it, and they should be able to give those people proper punishment. Problem taken care of. No reason to punish a much larger group of innocent people.
its basically gonna make the kids who didnt do anything hate the school and teachers more and put forth less motivation

Almost like combatting terrorism....
More than likely the administration is worried about insurance carriers and litigation. The collective punishment is a stall tactic. They want to keep everyone locked up until they develop better/updated plan of supervision.
I say this based on your statement about the student(s) leaving the library. Which seem like a no big deal thing. Until the student is hit by a car and crippled in the parking lot, when he was supposed to be safe and sound in the library.
In schools today it's all about the money. Many people will say tests, but tests=money.
If you can remain rational and talk to the teachers/ administration, listen to them, and see if there is an opportunity for you to input you own ideas/suggestions you might be able to expedite a solution to this problem.
The key is to remain RATIONAL. Which is damn near impossible for a teenager to do.
good luck
