GTR2 and RFactor are my two newest acquisitions and I'm looking for a new gamepad that will give me a little more finetuned control.  Currently I'm using the Sidewinder, which works fine for the Need for Speed series, but for the sims, the steering is a bit jerky no matter how much I tune it.  The Sidewinder only has the 4 way directional part - no control stick.  Does anyone have suggestions?  So far I've looked at a Logitech controller with dual control sticks and also the XBox controller for PC.  Any help from the PC racers here is much appreciated.

How fast does your PC go? Mine just sits there looking fast.

xbox 360 controller would be my recommendation. I'm assuming you mentioned the original xbox like controller btw.

I saw a USB wireless dongle somewhere on the net that let you use your wireless 360 controller with your PC.  It was only like $20.  Totally worth it if you already got a 360 controller.

I thought of getting the wheel, but I don't have the funds free to do that right now.

I can win races with a gamepad, I just need the adjustment to be more finetuned than the 4-way directional pad will do.  The control stick will give me the whole 360.

I use a Logitech Rumblepad 2. Works great, even after slamming it around out of frustration....

I've used the Xbox 360 controller for some of the games (NFS Carbon, FlatOut, FlatOut 2, and BF2/2142 for flying).  I think it's worth it, as I could not stand using any other controllers out there.  The PS1/2 adapted controller idea is also a good one, if you got one handy.  But if buying a controller, I cannot recommend anything else if sticking with just the gamepad.  I've held some of the other controllers and I have tried to see if it'll fit comfortably.  Sadly none of them do.  My last favorite controller was the old MS Sidewinder gamepad that I have used in various emulation games.  Since getting the 360 controller, I have found it to be the most functional, fitting, and most usable.  Added to the fact that there's a 3rd-party driver, at least you'll drive straight.  Yes, it does mean the MS drivers for this is not up to par (no dead-zone).
