Okay, can anyone shed any light on the fact that my CPU never runs cool?

I mean, it's always touching 40 at rest and hits above 50 at load...

I've tried re-applying the thermal paste and keeping the fans at full RPM (It's too noisy, and only brings the temps down a little bit...)

I have a crap HP pavillion case with one 120mm extractor fan and the Akasa Cool Blue CPU fan with Arctic Silver paste...

Would it be that the Airflow is just horrible? Because this case doesn't have a motherboard tray, I can't tuck cables behind it, so there's quite a bit of air-flow restriction...

Only other thing I can think of is the thermal paste having gone slightly over the side of the HS on my Athlon64 3000+ (Newcastle - Not overclocked) and is heating up the chip...

Any Ideas?

Also, I was thinking of getting a new case, what do you guys think about the Lian-Li PC7+?

thermal pase is running from the sides of the cpu? not good. there should be only a very very very slight amount of thermal paste on the cpu (the thinnest you can get it to cover the IHS)

the first time I put it on, it was way too thick, so I took it off and put a tiny bit on, and I'm pretty sure it's as thin as it's going to get, without being patchy...

how are the temps when  the side is off? also do you have a link to the cooler (yeah, i'm too lazy to google it)

I don't know about cases but your CPU temps are high but not dangerously so. I think anything over 45C is hot but just 50C isn't exactly burning up (at least I don't think so).
Do you have any other type of cooling for your CPU, like another cooler you could try to switch with? Exactly how restricted is your airflow on a scale of 1-10, 10 being not even a hurricane could blow wind through it & 1 being nothing at all in the way?
I don't personally see how thermal paste could do any damage but I don't know for 100% sure, if the paste got on stuff why don't you just clean it off?

It never gets above 50C though even during gaming & 3DMark?

Well, I got my cooler off OcUK, it's...  Cooler Link!

These temps are with the side off, with the side on, it's 40-50 the whole time...

As for airflow... I'd say... *checks*

5-6, it's not as bad as I remember, but could be better.

I haven't done 3DMark in a long time, it makes my PC scared, but while gaming, it sometimes hits the low 60s, and i have to open the big window in my room to get it to stay below 55 while gaming for extended periods...

Simple test for air flow is to take the case off and monitor the temps......if they settle lower off thenyou have an airflow problem.....

Well, as i said, it's not *that* bad, since I cut off some unused cabling...

Idling @ 42 now.

if you are not overclocked, 60°C @ load for an A64 is still ok. not great temps but you wont do any damage. Is everything dirt free? try redoing the cableing with some cable ties (there's always room for improvement). can you add a fan to your case (maybe even a ghetto mod)? i dont see how you can improve you temps unless you go for a better cooler, better case or ghetto modding the whole case

EDIT: is the pressure pushing the cooler to the cpu high enough. if its too low it severely can hurt the cooling performance

gather some money, save a week or two get a X-Navigator.  which would be about 185USD. It has  everything you need to cool down your computer.  fans, 2 X 120mm, 3 x 90mm. plus you have a 500W PS and a "cool" look. i say "cool" because i swore i would not  buy another tower with leds because it sucks when you have to download all night for a game (mostly) or porn (i swear i never do that). it makes lots of freaking blue lights and its hard to sleep.  even with something o nthe tower, you cant really block all fans, because they all have leds.

except all that, its a  freaking good tower, it worth the price.

Edit: according to  my tower, my cpu is at 24. i guess its low enough to not to worry about frying my computer

You always spread thermal grease with a RAZOR blade, dab very very tiny amounts on different parts of the CPU, and start to spread.  Those Pre-fab cases are shite man I would recommend getting a new one, maybe an aftermarket cooler as well. If it's that bad, stick your case next to a window and open it when you're using it. My room is about 55*F and it keeps my PC down to 25*C!!!! Yes it's a bit cold to sleep, but pile the blankets on and rest well knowing your PC is happy now .

Yeah, as I said in the 1st post, I was looking at the Lian-Li PC7+ any thoughts on that?
