Do yourself a favor and drive around the nice homes in your town.  Think about the people that live there and whether or not they worry about things like being able to pay the mortgage/rent/utilities, having reliable transportation, paying for good healthcare, or going out on a regular basis to restaurants, movies, etc with their friends.  Not to mention having enough money for retirement.  Think about how much easier it is to go through life never having to worry that much about being able to pay for these things.

Then, drive around the poor areas of your town and ask yourself the same questions about the people that live there.  Look at the people going in and out of the stores, sitting at the busstops or walking down the street.  What would happen to them if they suddenly lost their job, had to have expensive surgery, or had their car totalled.

I know there are exceptions, but the majority of people in the nice areas did well in school or just plain worked their ass off in a good trade.  So, as a formerly poor person, my advice to you is to work hard at school and really apply yourself at whatever you do so that one day you can actually enjoy life and not just suffer through it.
Not sure where you live, but most of the people around here like that are mooching off of 1 breadwinner. Its not like the affluent folks around here know their ass from a whole in the ground for the most part. Yeah I know it sounds like a generalization, but having been a resident of Socal my whole damn life i can say for sure most of these people would starve if it wasn't for the 1 person that busted their ass to make a shit ton of money. I see what your saying about pulling yourself up, but around here it just means lowering yourself. Or you do porn I did say it was soCal...

but this probably applies in your neck of the woods, just not the fake land of soCal where its not really their house or car...

I don't think North Hollywood/SoCal is anywhere near being representative of the rest of the country.

Btw, I'm from Florida.

I started strong in high school .. with all top level class, took latin for two years ... by junior year I decided to take vocational school (HVAC) and to dumbed down classes, went as little as possible ... in fact in school I never went past Algebra ...

Worked retail, drove truck,etc ...

... fast forward to 24 ... I went to to a lame 2 year school for comp programming (had learned basic when I was 13 so I wasn't cold), started working for one of my instructors 1/2 way through. At this point I actually enjoyed education. Each job I switched to paid more and more and the work became more and more challenging ... I ended up getting hired on my reputation and my skills ... not quite 6 figures yet .. almost But honestly I never cared about money ... I just truly enjoyed the work.

I doubt anyone I ever worked with/for could ever tell where I went to college.
(Results not typical. Your results may vary. If you are in school absorb as much as you can now.)

my grades in high school were enough to get into college, once in college the motto was two-o and go meaning GPA of 2.0 and you graduate college. i didn't really learn shit until i actually started working a job, which, of course they taught me everything i needed to know. but more important than my degree from college was my merchant mariners document, and my USCG license for Marine Engineering which came with the diploma

I have A's and B's in all of my classes but my GPA is 2.60.   The only bad grade I've ever recieved was in language classes.  I failed German and finshed two and a half years of Spanish with a D.  Now my GPA is fucked.

My high school grades fell as I lost interest.  Didn't smoke pot til after I'd finished with school.  Don't do it during the year at uni tho.

im not sure how it works where you are(?) but in Australia you can do a course to gain entry either into university if you haven't finished high school, or you got bad marks. so no high school didn't effect me.

but more importantly, the social aspects of high school effect you even less then your grades when its all over.

I went to a 'gifted' school up until 10th grade when I had to move. My life was very rough during high school years, dealing with my mothers addiction and eventually her passing at 38. So school didn't gain that much focus for me, I didn't graduate very honorably, maybe I'm just fortunate because I'm now a UNIX Systems Admin for a hospital corporation based in Indiana which extends to parts of IL.

I think schooling has some to do with your future, I know it definitely helps, Lord knows I didn't get here by fluke it took a lot of busting my ass. I worked 2 jobs for 2 years 16hrs a day for 6 days a week! Granted I've always been a computer nerd and it was always my means of escape, so I suppose I may be destined to do what I love?

Anyway I think you should really focus on school it looks much better than going into a field saying you know what you're doing, it's pretty hard to get someone to give you a chance. So not going to college dramatically altered the course of my life, it could have been much easier, after all I wanted to go to Berkeley to work on the BSD project oh well all you can do is make the most out of what you have I'm trying to do that now, so take heed suck in everything you can mate, you wont regret it in the future!

I'm a Junior right now.

After freshman year, I kind of gave up caring about an education. I mean fuck. I got 2200 on the English SAT, that should be good enough to show that I learned something. The whole system is fucked over. Judging a person by a letter grade is horrible. I would rather accept a struggling student with a heart of gold, rather than a tightass 4.3 GPA ass.

But alas, it doesnt work. I drink with friends once a week, it doesnt do anything to my overall being. I havent smoked weed yet, but I do enjoy a Cuban now and again

I Have little chances of getting into a good Academic school, because
1. I dont have amazing grades (but awesome standardized test scores)
2. I dont have the money

My parents are basically leaving me to live in Orange County after I graduate. My real only alternative to huge student loans to a school I didnt want to go to, was the military. And well, I hope that works out in the end.

Well, in high school, I was an 'okay' student, my GPA was 3.1.  It took me three tries on the ACT to get at least a 24.  My scores were 18,21, and 24.  I barely got into the university I wanted to attend.  Well, the first semester didn't do so well for me.  GPA 1.0  So now I am at a Community College, starting over.  I'm only 19 but hey, I got time.
