Hey again,
just installed the home premium 64-bit edition. All is fine and dandy, no crashes. Was playing San Andreas earlier today, gotta love that game

To the point, when I try to joina bf2 server, even singleplayer, I find myself waiting a minute+ to verify client data. I wouldnt expect it's the HDD that's at fault. Any ideas? Used to take me like 30 secs. Any suggestions?

Vista just takes more than XP to run, so things will run slower.

it could be something to do with the privileges. make sure bf2 is enabled to run as an administrator.

I'd go with that.

If he can get into a BF2 server period I think that's already taken care of. I haven't had to get into it myself (because I don't have Vista) but from what I understand PB boots you as soon as you try to join a server.

Vista uses 1GB in idle.

1gb of RAM ?!

There is your problem. Bf 2 to run great it needs at least 2Gb on XP, but with Vista wich is even more power hungry than XP that is your bottleneck now. I used to have 1Gb and it took ages, now this problem is gone.

In the future games ready for Vista will run better than games now do on XP it's just that bf2 is not Vista ready so you will have some sort of slowdown than on XP.

In my honest opinon Vista is all fancy shmancy but at this moment it sux for games. Give it some time to all settle in. I would switch back to XP if you're gaming a lot. If not ... well just buy another stick of 1Gb RAM.

Hmm, right ok. Thanks for all replies.

Gonna get myself another 2 gig. One more question. I have a gig running in dual channel already, if I connect another 2 gig through dual channel (2* 1G) will that hinder performance?

Not if the new sticks are faster or the same speed.

How big is your current swap file? Be sure, to check that out.
Your swap file should always be 1,5 times your RAM.
In XP, the OS tells you the best size for that.
I have 2GB RAM, so my pagefile is 3070.
Also check google for Vista tweak sites...

Yeah that 1GB is gonna kill ya. Vista running full trot at idle (by that I mean all the little gewgaws running) takes up 500-600MB. It's obscene, yes. 2GB SHOULD cover you. If you can hold off one or two weeks I can tell you first-hand if 2GB is decent.

The swap file will bring some long time for loading. If you run out of RAM, then Windows uses the Swap file for extra memory. Whatever you designate as swap will be like RAM. 3GB of Swap=3GB of virtual RAM. The problem is that RAM is very quick to access, while using virtual memory requires reading and writing on the disk, which is still quick but adds precious seconds to the loading process. Basically, using virtual memory (swap file) = longer load times.

I use Xp 64-Bit with no issues in BF2 or 2142. As per above it more than likely a memory issue (ie. lack of). For memory intensive tasks (photoshop, gaming, etc.) a Vista user should aim for at minimum 2GB. 3+ GB provides the best performance in this case.
