I recently began overclocking my PC (stats are at the bottom) and noticed that an annoying problem has cropped up.  What happens is that at random times during the game, BF2 will minimize itself so i have to quickly alt-tab it back to focus.  This is particularly annoying while flying since you will inevitably crash.

Obviously I can reduce the clock speed closer to stock (where i don't see this as a problem), but was wondering if there was something other than the processor doing this.  I would expect that if the processor is too stressed that it would cause OS to blue screen or program to exception fault or something - not just minimize.  kind of peculiar behavior - at least to me.

Anyone else face a similar issue?

I'm using a single monitor and have disabled my #2 monitor in the display settings.  I'm not running xfire or other programs like that.  I AM running Norton Antivirus but it's set up to not auto-update, etc (just protect in background).  Also, BF2 is the only application i have running at the time.  It's a fresh windows XP Pro install too.  my framerates are in the 80-90 range most of the time which i'm ok with.

Here's my stats:

Intel 840D EE (currently @ 4GHz)  - Kentsfield on the way...
EVGA i680 mobo
2 GB RAM (4 sticks of OCZ 667MHz)
500 GB Seagate SATA2 drive (no RAID yet)
dual BFG 7800 GT cards in SLI
DVD, etc

I've really got no idea. But if you think it might be Norton AV you could try playing without it running (in single player if you're a big fraidy cat  , though I doubt there's much risk playing without AV for a short time). At least that would narow it down. I've had issues with AV software and BF2 in the past, but then again my system doesn't meet min reqs.

You have an app or program running in the background that is taking priority over the open window/app  namely BF2 (Norton is a very good culprit) ...

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.  I believe i have resolved this.

What i did was to pull up msconfig.exe (start->run and type msconfig) and disable all the startup programs that went out and looked for updates from the web (eg, java, hp printer software, etc).

Secondly, i pulled up Norton Internet Security and in some advanced options menu there is list of programs that the tool has 'learned' the behavior of.  These programs have a category that says 'allow traffic', 'custom', 'block', etc.  It turned out that BF2 was set to 'custom'.  So i just set it to 'allow'.  This should have effect of always allowing internet traffic to/from BF2 process.

Since i made those changes, i haven't had a minimization problem.  I'm pretty sure the problem was related to Norton and not the other things that i messed around with in msconfig.  However, i haven't re-enabled them either to find out.  I'm leary on disabling Norton entirely since i was hosed one time before when i got infected with tons of spyware and had to rebuild my machine.  My compromise would be to disable AV just on that one program that is accessing the net (BF2.exe)

again, thanks for the help.  Hope this might help others that faced similar problems

At least it doesn't randomly minimize, wait 10 seconds, and then CTD randomly like mine.
