Hey all. I finally got SF working, and man it's great! Except for one thing that most of you are having, good computer or not. That is lag.
Now laugh all you want, here's my specs:

1.5GHz Pentium 4 Processor
512MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9200 Pro Video Card
17" LCD Flatscreen Monitor

Well that's my system, and i used to be able to play 32 player maps, with 32 players in it, with barely any lag at all, surprising eh? Now ever since I installed Special Forces, I play Warlord, and i can hardly aim without my crosshair going all jerky. I pressed crtl+alt+del and removes background processes to imporve the lag a bit, but it still lags. I heard even people with computers, 100 times better than mine, are getting lag as well.

Is it just a type of glitch in the game? Because vanilla BF2 runs fine for me.

It's the game, it's not optimized very well for some reason. I have everything on high for BF2 with no lag, and constant 80-100 fps. With the same settings on SF, I get lag spikes, and fps drops to 30 at times, and goes up to 100. Hopefully they fix this in the next patch.

RAM !!! ram ram ram..... need more ram, much more if you can afford it. SF uses much more in the way of resources when it comes to rendering, especially on Iron Gator (within the ship).
I don't know too much about the type of graphics card you use as I have a nvidia 6600GT OC (128mb)... But I do know that when I only had 1Gig ram, I had severe lag... When I bought an additional gig, I was one of the first players into a new map and usually captured a flag before anyone else had even joined ... and no lag problems.

You may also have to look at your settings (graphics), there was an adjustment on the graphics side of things. I used to play with everything on high, I now play on medium and some on low, but it doesn't make that much of a difference

Have a look here as well > http://www.tweakguides.com/BF2_1.html

I'm glad it's of some help . Good to hear you're buying a new PC, now's the time to see if you can get a really good deal on ram.... If you can get one with 2 gig then that's great, most pcs only come with around 1 gig, but if you ask for an upgrade at the time of purchase, you might get a better deal than having to buy more ram at another time.

Good luck, hope it all works out well

I have to agree with thinner.  I just moved from 1G to 2G and it's like night and day.  I was  having serious lag issues in SF with 1G, and with 2G I'm always in the game and on my 2nd flag before my buds finish verifying client data.  Tear gas & smoke used to destroy my frame rates too, but not anymore.  And when other guys start chatting about these horrible lag spikes, I'm sailing along just fine.  My friends with 1G are *really* getting tired of me asking them where they are at the beginning of maps.

It really does make that much of a difference - so I'll shut up now to forego the risk of soundling like an bleating ass once more.

One last thing - I do however agree that 2G shouldn't be necessary.  There's no reason why DICE couldn't make the game more playable on systems with 1G... which really still is a shitload of memory.

SF runs fine for me (not as well as vanilla by far but still very playable), but then all of a sudden it will drop to 15.0 FPS, it locks at this exact frame rate for periods of sometimes 5-10 mins, and other times until I restart the game. I just cant understand it, especially when my PC specs are:

Pentium 4 3.6Ghz @ Stock
2Gb Corsair DDR2 675Mhz
Sapphire radeon X800 XT @ Stock
WD Raptor 74GB 10,000RPM
Latest GFX Drivers / Well Maintained System.

This is what happens to me. This is also why I said it's because the game just isn't optimized very well.

The only trouble I've had in SF so far is when something blows up inches from me. Other than that, no lag at all.

My system: 2.8 gHz Pentium, 1 gig RAM, 256 MB NVidia 5600 video card (below min specs!!!)

My FPS in normal BF2(hey, vanilla sounds ghey ) is always around 35-50, but when i play any SF map except Ghost town it goes down to 15-25.

I really wanna know what DICE fucked up this time...

You definitely need to consider getting a better processor...
But yeah, my ping goes up 100 compared to what it is in vanilla BF2 (20's-30's)

i have 1 gig of kingston value ram.  I am thinking of going up to 2 gigs.  Should i use the same stuff or get a different brand? i am feeling the lag in load times for the games.

I have p4 3.2 1 gb ram and 128 mb 9600XT.
I can play the vanilla bf2 with 800*600 high-medium settings with 6x anti- aliasing (without dynamic lights its hard to see hiding bastards with that open.)i play sf as well with this settings except m in a chopper, just after i step into a heli fps drop to 10-15 and that is just stupid. SF has optimizing issues i guess.

BF2 I had 1600 1200, 4xTSSSAA (Transparency Super Sampling Anti Aliasing) and 8xAF, with max game settings, and you could NOT fault the FPS even when directly under air strikes.

BF2:SF I run in 1280 960, 4xTSSSAA, 4xAF, max game settings and maps like the Iron Gator run really badly, 30fps (which i do sympathise is about 20 fps more than most)

Rig is:

64 4000+ @ 2.6Ghz
2Gb PC3200 RAM
7800 GTX (256) overclocked slightly
